Dear Friend of the ASP: As the new executive director for the Astronomical Society of the Pacific (ASP), I write to you, a good friend of the Society, to request your continued support of our mission-based programs through a gift to our Fall Fund Drive. Your support is more important than ever before as our mission takes on an exciting new emphasis. With the endorsement of the Board of Directors, we are refining the way we articulate our mission as a means to a higher end: the ASP will continue to work toward increasing the understanding and appreciation of astronomy through scientists, educators, enthusiasts, and the public as a vehicle for advancing science literacy and exchange. Promoting science literacy through engagement in astronomy is something the Society has successfully accomplished for many years. By formalizing this concept in our mission we provide ourselves a goal that is bigger than ourselves -- and vitally important. It's about creating an electorate sufficiently science-literate to be able to make enlightened decisions on questions of science and technology that will largely determine the future of our species on this planet. Nothing less. We can do it as we have for nearly 120 years through key avenues of astronomy engagement by bringing together the people who love the sky and want to share their passion for it with others. Our education, public outreach, and other programs continue to be as strong and respected as ever in advancing our rearticulated mission. Project ASTRO pairs classroom teachers and scientists in improving science teaching. Family ASTRO offers a family version of the effort. Astronomy from the Ground Up is breaking new ground in online professional development for informal educators at small museums and science centers looking to put more astronomy in their offerings. The Night Sky Network empowers the amateur astronomy community to engage in public outreach. The Publications of the ASP and Conference Series continue to promote the communication of new ideas among professional astronomers. And our slate of professional, education, and amateur awards recognizes excellence in all of the constituencies the ASP serves. I ask for your continued partnership with the Society by making a gift today as we advance the cause of promoting science literacy through astronomy and space science. Sincerely,

James G. Manning Executive Director P.S. Please make a gift today to support our mission-based astronomy and space science education and public outreach programs to advance science literacy.
