2006 FALL FUND DRIVE

November 2006

Dear Friend of the ASP: As a long-time friend of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific (ASP), you know that we are one of the few organizations devoted to increasing people's understanding, appreciation, and enjoyment of astronomy. Over the past few years we have sharpened our focus to concentrate on educating the educators-- amplifying our efforts hundreds of times over by working with teachers of all descriptions--K12 classroom teachers, museum and science center staffers, college faculty, even amateur astronomers who do public outreach. Your tax deductible gift to the ASP Annual Fund supports our focus on education and outreach. Our programs, working directly with educators, are already bearing fruit all over the country. Last year alone, over 1,000 Project ASTRO volunteers partnered with classroom teachers, bringing their knowledge and their passion to nearly 30,000 school children. The rejuvenated online teachers' newsletter, Universe in the Classroom, is bringing accurate astronomy (and easy-to-use classroom activities) to more teachers than ever before. Over 200 astronomy clubs have signed up to participate in the Night Sky Network, using our specially-designed Outreach ToolKits at their star parties, in classroom visits, with local youth groups, and in many other venues. The ASP's education programs have been recognized by NASA, the National Science Foundation, and the National Academy of Sciences as having outstanding educational value. As a Hawaiian education administrator recently put it, "We in the Department of Education always struggle with ideas of how to increase meaningful parent involvement in school functions and academics. The Family ASTRO event was an example of how to do it right." Your gift enables our continued work with the many educators who want to use astronomy as the inspirational spark to engage their students in science. Working together, we can make a difference. Sincerely,

Michael Bennett Executive Director

P.S. Every gift makes a difference. If your support helps even one child to discover that science can be fun, it will be worth it!
