Advancing science literacy through astronomy

Dear Friend of the ASP: On behalf of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific, I hope your summer is going well. Summer is a busy time for us at the ASP, filled with opportunities to advance our mission; in particular, we have a unique opportunity provided by a generous supporter that we'd like to share with you, and ask for your help in achieving. The TABASGO Foundation on behalf of Las Cumbres Observatory Global Telescope has provided the ASP with a challenge grant to upgrade its aging information technology systems. The Foundation challenges friends and supporters of the Society to contribute $27,500 -- one-half of the total $55,000 cost of the upgrade. The Foundation will match dollar-for-dollar to reach the cost. Only $13,000 more is needed, and we ask our good friends and supporters to consider a donation to this challenge opportunity to help us take full advantage of the Foundation's generosity to reach our goal. The funds will be used to replace aging and failing software and hardware with new and more capable versions, to fund the conversion of our records and databases to the new systems, and to integrate the new systems into our overall operation. This upgrade will bring the IT infrastructure up to date, improving our internal operations and preparing the Society to efficiently and effectively advance its mission. This is a very important step into the future for the Society, and will also help us to improve our services to members and to upgrade and improve our web site. "Infrastructure" may not have the same cachet as programs, but it's the essential base on which all of ASP's efforts depend: it makes possible the mission and accomplishments that you have supported so generously in the past. Please consider a contribution to this important effort today to help us reach this vital goal.
