Card Games for the Whole Family - with a Cosmic Twist

More Information and Web Links for the Images Depicted on the Cards

The Deep Space Objects

The information and links below describe the specific Deep Space Objects depicted on our Cosmic Decoders cards. If you want to find general information about different types of cosmic objects (such as planetary nebulae, spiral galaxies, etc.), click on the following link: Learn More About Deep Space Objects and Cosmic Terms. For more on telescopes in general, click here.

Many objects in astronomy don’t have names, but are referred to by their numbers in catalogs astronomers have compiled over the past few centuries. In the lists below, "M numbers" refer to Charles Messier’s list of interesting (fuzzy-looking) objects in the sky (a list he compiled in the 18th century so he could avoid them in his search for comets). "NGC numbers" refer to a much larger 19th century list, called the New Galactic Catalog.
