Sunday Geology Hikes

Boulder Colorado sits right at the foot of the Rocky Mountains. There are beautiful hikes that start only one mile from the campus, in Chautauqua Park. (The Chautauqua movement started in New York over 100 years ago. In the days before radio, it featured interesting public speakers -- sort of like the ASP). Boulder Chautauqua has a glorious old auditorium and dining hall, with a great Sunday brunch from 8 am to 2pm.

On Sunday morning we will offer 3 geologist-led hikes, of duration 1, 2, and 3 hours, all beginning at 9 am. A bus will circulate among the conference hotels to take people to Chautauqua and the start of the hikes. You can ride the bus back when finished or, if you choose to eat Sunday brunch, walk back. By foot, the return to campus is an easy downhill walk.

All three hikes go close to the famous “Flatirons,” and it is common to see climbers scrambling up them. (We won't be doing that!) The 3-hour hike will go to Royal Arch that overlooks Boulder.

The hikes are free, but in order to judge the number of hikers, we ask that you please sign up on-line.

Things To Keep In Mind:

Mornings can be chilly in Boulder, even in the summer. As the day goes on, however, the sun is quite strong. Sunscreen, water (there’s none on the trail, but there is a ranger station at the start), and an outer light jacket are recommended. If you want any snacks bring those, too. Note that the mile-high altitude of Boulder makes hiking a little more strenuous than at sea level.

We are scheduling these hikes in the morning because in the afternoons in August there can often be a brief summer shower.

The Chautauqua does not take brunch reservations. It is just a matter of walking up to the Dining Hall, about 100 yards from the trailhead. Sometimes you have to wait 10-15 minutes to be seated but that’s rare.
