ASP Endowment Funds

The ASP endowment is the result of generous donations in support of the ASP's activities.

The following funds support the ongoing operational expenses of the Society:

Thomas Lincoln Casey Endowment
Phoebe Apperson Hearst Endowment

The following funds support specific ASP activities:

Bart J. Bok Memorial Fund

Established in 1983 in memory of Bart J. Bok (1906 1983), outstanding researcher and tireless worker for the ASP. Bok was Director at several major observatories and made important research contributions to our understanding of the Milky Way and of star formation. He was the 1977 Bruce Medalist. His extensive work in popularizing astronomy was recognized with the Society's 1982 Klumpke-Roberts Award. Income from the fund supports the Society's educational programs.

Charles H. Adams Fund

Established in 1994 in honor of Charles Adams (1868 1951), the father of Ansel Adams. "Carlie" was the ASP Secretary/Treasurer from 1925 until 1950. His enthusiastic support of astronomy and the ASP brought in many new members and he personally mentored many students. Income from the fund is used for the development and distribution of astronomy education resource materials for teachers.

Alexander F. Morrison Fund

Established in 1939 in honor of Alexander F. Morrison (1856 1921), noted San Francisco attorney. He and his wife were life members of the Society who gave generously to Lick Observatory, and their endowment also funded a planetarium at the California Academy of Science. The Morrison Fund is used to support the lectures at the ASP Annual Meeting.

Klumpke-Roberts Fund

Established in 1974 in honor of Dorothea Klumpke-Roberts (1861 1942) and her husband, Isaac Roberts, both noted astronomers in the early part of the twentieth century who specialized in photography and mapping the sky (Carte du Ciel). Income from the fund is used to finance the Klumpke-Roberts Award, which recognizes outstanding contributions to education or popularization in astronomy.

Eric and Maria Muhlmann Fund

Established in 1983 by long-time astronomy enthusiasts Eric and Maria Muhlmann for outstanding research done at Mauna Kea Observatory. Upon the deaths of Eric and Maria Muhlmann the fund was converted by the ASP Board to endow an annual award recognizing important contributions in the development of astronomical instrumentation, software, or supporting infrastructure.

Thomas Brennan Fund

Established in 1993 by Terry and Cindy Brennan in honor of Thomas Brennan, lifetime educator. The income from the fund subsidizes the Brennan Award, which annually recognizes excellence in teaching astronomy at the high school level.

The ASP Annual Appeal

The Society's First Annual Appeal was initiated in 1982 to enable the ASP to significantly widen its educational programs and advance the essential mission of the organization by increasing public understanding and appreciation of astronomy. The ASP welcomes donations to support its many educational programs. The names of ASP donors are annually recognized in our Annual Report.

Many well-known astronomers and astronomy popularizers have served as chair or co-chair of the Annual Appeal throughout the years:
