Editor of the Publications of the ASP

The Astronomical Society of the Pacific is soliciting both applications and nominations of candidates for the position of Editor of the Publications of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific (PASP). As part of the ASP's mission to advance astronomical research, the PASP publishes refereed papers covering all wavelengths and distance scales as well as papers on the latest innovations in astronomical instrumentation and software, invited reviews, and dissertation summaries. The new Editor will replace current Editor Paula Szkody of the University of Washington, who will be retiring from the position at the end of 2012.

The new Editor will be responsible for maintaining the continued excellence of the Journal, which has been in existence since 1889. The successful applicant should have the following qualifications:

  1. Recognized stature and achievement in astronomy and astrophysics.
  2. Administrative experience managing both peers and staff.
  3. A clear vision for the future of PASP and of electronic publishing, in concert with the strategic goals of the ASP.
  4. Experience as referee.

The Editor is responsible for the editorial policies and standards for the Journal and for soliciting peer reviews of all papers. The Editor has help from associate editor for instrumentation Daniel Fabricant. The Editor will:

  1. Make all decisions about which papers will be accepted for publication and communicate such decisions to the author.
  2. Handle the interface with the publisher, the University of Chicago Press, and insure the continuing high quality of the PASP.
  3. Prepare and oversee the Journal’s budget with funds provided by the ASP.
  4. Report to the ASP Executive Director on the status of PASP.

Although other options are possible, it is expected that the Editor will operate from his/her home institution and be compensated at roughly a quarter-time level through a contract from the ASP to that institution. The ASP will support the equivalent of a quarter-time assistant editor to be selected and managed by the Editor.

Candidates for this position should submit a cover letter, CV, bibliography, and names of three references by May 1, 2012 to the Chair of the Search Committee, James Manning, ASP, 390 Ashton Avenue, San Francisco, CA 94112, or electronically to jmanning {at} astrosociety.org.
