2013 Annual Meeting: Ensuring STEM Literacy – Abstract Submission Deadline Extended to May 24
Abstract proposals are welcome for the ASP’s 2013 Annual Meeting, “Ensuring STEM Literacy.” Proposals for abstracts must be submitted via our online system, and not via regular mail or email.
The ASP invites EPO Abstract submissions in four categories:
- Poster Papers
- Ten-minute Oral Presentations
- Hands-on Workshops/Sessions, one hour duration
- Special Interest Group (SIG) Discussions, one hour duration
EPO Conference Abstract Threads – “Ensuring STEM Literacy” through:
- 21st Century Media and Technology
- Multicultural and Cross-Cultural Initiatives
- Addressing Misconceptions & Conceptual Change
- Evaluating and Assessing EPO Programs and Products

Joint EPO/Cosmos Plenaries
- Keynote: Natalie Batalha with San Jose State University and NASA Ames speaking about the NASA Kepler Mission science and EPO.
- Impact of the Next Generation Science Standards for both higher education and K-12, with panelists to include Jacquey Barber, University of California Berkeley’s Lawrence Hall of Science. More details to follow.
EPO Plenaries
- Cara Santa Maria, Huffington Post blogger, and host of Talk Nerdy to Me video series.
- Citizen Science Panel, including Laura Whyte from the Adler Planetarium and Zooniverse, and Connie Walker with NOAO and GLOBE at Night.

ASP Inaugurates New App for 125th Meeting
The ASP will soon launch our first ever Annual Meeting app (for Apple iOS and Android platforms) to provide unprecedented opportunities for attendees, sponsors, and exhibitors. The app will take the ASP’s 125th milestone Meeting to whole new interactive level – from customizing your digital Meeting program based on your selected interests, to networking, to messaging via social media. While in San Jose, attendees can stay connected to Meeting speakers, updates, announcements, and each other. Meeting registrants are asked to keep an eye out for a welcome email with more details about how to download the app and follow its easy instructions.

Limited Scholarships Available for Cosmos in the Classroom Symposium
With great gratitude for recently secured funding from a private donor, the ASP is offering a limited number of $750 scholarships to three categories of Cosmos attendees (who are U.S. citizens) in the following order of priority:
- Instructors of astronomy in community colleges (who send certification that they are teaching astronomy currently and that they are not able to obtain travel funds from their own institutions). Part-time instructors are eligible to attend, as long as they have taught astronomy for more than one semester.
- Instructors of introductory astronomy at 4-year liberal arts colleges and state universities that do not have significant programs in astronomical research (who send certification that they are teaching astronomy currently and that they are not able to obtain travel funds from their own institutions).
- Graduate students or post-docs who are going into positions next year that require independent teaching introductory astronomy (who send certification that they are not able to obtain travel funds from their own institutions.)
Priority will be given to those who teach in institutions that have significant enrollments of underserved student of color. Please visit the ASP's Meeting page (Cosmos Scholarship menu item to right) for application information, applicant criteria, and online form.

 Galileo Teacher Training Program (GTTP): Galileo Looks Beyond to Other Worlds A hands-on astronomy workshop for teachers in Grades 3–12 and those who work with them

GTTP Scholarships for California Teachers Available – Deadline June 24
The California Space Grant Coalition has awarded the ASP with funds to underwrite a limited number of scholarships for California teachers to attend the ASP’ s GTTP Workshop in San Jose, July 20 & 21. For consideration, grade 3-12 teachers may send an email with the information below to gttp@astrosociety.org:

- Estimated percentage of students in your class who receive free lunch
- Estimated percentage of underrepresented students of color in your class

2013 Bay Area Project ASTRO Workshop – Aug 2 & 3
Project ASTRO is a program that matches teachers with astronomers in Bay Area schools and community organizations. Project ASTRO is looking for 3rd–9th grade teachers to work with volunteer astronomers who have a keen interest in sharing the wonders of astronomy with students. Together, teachers and their astronomer partner attend a free 2-day summer workshop to learn hands-on, inquiry-based astronomy activities designed to involve students in the excitement of scientific discovery.
Audience: Teachers in grades 3–9; volunteer astronomers with a passion for sharing their love of astronomy
Date: Friday, August 2 / Saturday, August 3; 9:00am – 4:30pm (attendance on both days is required)
Location: San Mateo County Office of Education, 101 Twin Dolphin Drive, Redwood City, CA

2013 Galileo Educator Network PDI: Sept 28 & 29 – Bringing Galileo, NASA, and the Next Generation Science Standards to Teachers
Astronomy Professional Development for Teacher Leaders, Teacher Educators, and Professional Development Providers: A NASA Galileo Educator Network (GEN) Professional Development Institute (PDI) presented by the ASP and partners.
Become a NASA Galileo Educator Fellow through this 15-hour Professional Development Institute (PDI) for teacher leaders, teacher educators, and PD providers. The Galileo Educator Network PDI emphasizes the integration of science content, science practices, and the nature of science as outlined in the national Framework for K–12 Science Education. Our goals include preparing participants to deliver their own GEN professional development to assist K–12 teachers with the implementation of the Next Generation Science Standards, in the context of astronomy and space science.
Dates: Saturday–Sunday, September 28–29, 2013, 8:30 am–4:30 pm
