Education & Outreach
Astronomical Society of the Pacific

Partner with Us

The Astronomical Society of the Pacific increases the understanding and appreciation of astronomy by engaging scientists, educators, enthusiasts and the public to advance science and science literacy. Make a gift today to support the ASP's networks that work to improve science literacy through astronomy.

NETWORK OF AMATEUR ASTRONOMERS
PROGRAMS
The NASA Night Sky Network (NSN) is a coalition of amateur astronomy clubs from across the country whose members are actively engaging their communities in exploring the skies through outreach events. The ASP, under contract to NASA, develops themed outreach toolkits, training DVD's for the outreach materials and ongoing support through telecoms and web casts with NASA scientists and monthly newsletters. Sharing the Universe is an NSF funded study of amateur astronomy clubs to develop additional support mechanisms that will help establish a culture of outreach within NSN clubs and others.

Recognition
Amateur Achievement Award For significant observational or technical achievements by an amateur astronomer Las Cumbres Amateur Outreach Award For outstanding outreach by an amateur astronomer to children and the public

NETWORK OF INFORMAL SCIENCE EDUCATORS
PROGRAMS
Astronomy from the Ground Up is bringing more astronomy to small science centers. This NSF funded program is a creating a growing community of informal educators in small science and nature centers who are interested in bringing more astronomy to their audiences. The community is supported by materials and training developed by the ASP and others and ongoing learning communication through a web portal.

Recognition
Klumpke-Roberts Award For outstanding contributions to the public understanding and appreciation of astronomy

NETWORKS OF FORMAL EDUCATORS (K14)
PROGRAMS
Project ASTRO/Family ASTRO Creating Partnerships Project ASTRO is an inquiry-based national science education program that pairs volunteer professional and amateur astronomers with educators, their students and families. Project ASTRO partners are in both classroom and after-school settings. Since 1993 the program has brought the excitement of scientific discovery to nearly 200,000 children. The Family ASTRO spin-off developed leader kits for family astronomy events to be hosted in after-school settings and has served thousands of families. There are 13 active sites around the country participating either in Family or Project ASTRO or in some cases both. Those coordinators meet annually to exchange innovations and resources at the Project ASTRO National Network Site Leaders' Meeting. Cosmos in the Classroom Approximately every three years, the ASP organizes a hands-on symposium on teaching astronomy to undergraduate, non-science majors. The proceedings of the 2000, 2004 and 2007 symposia are available through the ASP AstroShop. SOFIA Education and Outreach In partnership with the SETI Institute, the ASP manages the educational and public outreach program for NASA's Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy. This program has a goal of flying high school teachers with researchers on the observatory.

Recognition
Richard H. Emmons Award For excellence in college astronomy teaching Thomas J. Brennan Award For exceptional achievement related to the teaching of astronomy at the high school level Pricilla and Bart Bok Award For an astronomy award at the Intel Science and Engineering Fair.

ASP RESOURCES
Universe in the Classroom The ASP's newsletter for teachers of grades 3-12, is now hosted on the web and looking for international translators. Each issue features astronomy articles, classroom-ready activities, and resources. You may now register to be notified by e-mail when a new issue is posted. www.astrosociety.org/uitc Investigating Astronomy Developed by TERC in partnership with NOAO and the ASP, this modular high school curriculum integrates real life, data driven applications into the astronomical and physical science content of the activities. http://ia.terc.edu AstroShop: Education Products Online The web-based AstroShop features ASP publications and products available to help K-14 teachers and astronomers who work with them, college educators, families, and amateur astronomers doing outreach. www.astrosociety.org/astroshop.html
