NEW INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION ELEMENTS ARRIVE AT KSC
Pressurized Mating Adapter-3 (PMA-3), the third PMA for the
International Space Station (ISS), arrived at Kennedy Space Center today
from the Boeing Company in Huntington Beach, CA. The Z1 Integrated Truss
Segment, the initial framework component for the International Space
Station, also began its processing at KSC in the Space Station
Processing Facility this week.
PMA-3 and the Z1 truss are set to fly on Space Shuttle mission STS-92,
the third ISS assembly flight. While in orbit, PMA-3 will be removed
from the orbiter's payload bay by the astronauts using the remote
manipulator arm and mated to Node 1, a connecting passageway to the
living and working areas of the International Space Station. The primary
purpose of PMA-3 is to serve as a Shuttle docking port through which
crew members and equipment will transfer to ISS during later assembly
missions.
The Z1 truss allows the temporary installation of the U.S. power module
to Node 1. The truss will have attached to it control moment gyroscopes
for attitude control and will also hold Ku-band and S-band telemetry
equipment. In addition, it provides a mounting location for extra
vehicular activity equipment.
Beginning this year with the launch of the first International Space
Station element, more than 100 components will ultimately be assembled
in low Earth orbit over the next five years using approximately 45
assembly flights. When complete, the station will provide access for
researchers around the world to permanent, state-of-the-art laboratories
in the weightless environment of space.

DAVID B. GALLAGHER APPPOINTED DEEP SPACE 3 PROJECT MANAGER
David B. Gallagher has been named project manager of Deep
Space 3, a NASA mission that will be the first ever to try flying
multiple spacecraft in precision formation to test a powerful
astronomical observing technique called optical interferometry.
Gallagher previously served as project manager of JPL's
Pressure Modulator Infrared Radiometer instrument, part of the
science payload onboard NASA's Mars '98 orbiter, scheduled for
launch in December. Since joining JPL in 1989, he has managed the
Drop Physics Module project flown on the Space Shuttle and served
as integration and test manager for the Wide Field Planetary
Camera 2 aboard the Hubble Space Telescope.
Deep Space 3 is part of the New Millennium Program, a
flagship NASA venture whose goal is the testing of revolutionary
technologies in space flight so that they may be used with
confidence in space missions of the future. Set to launch in
early 2002, Deep Space 3 will demonstrate precision formation
flying by multiple spacecraft and long-baseline optical
interferometry. Together, these will link together widely
separated optical telescopes so they work as if they were a
single instrument with extraordinarily sharp resolving power.
Deep Space 3 will enable science applications of optical
interferometry and other spacecraft formations in the decades to
come. It will pave the way for future missions of NASA's Origins
Program, including the Space Interferometry Mission and
Terrestrial Planet Finder, whose respective goals are to detect
planets orbiting other stars and to determine whether any of
those newfound planets might harbor life.
Gallagher, who earned a bachelor's degree in electrical
engineering in 1982 from Purdue University, served as a design
engineer for the IBM Corporation upon graduation and subsequently
headed his own consulting firm for five years. Originally from
Maryland, he, wife Katherine, and their three children live in La
Canada, California.
JPL is a division of the California Institute of Technology.

WOLF TO DISCUSS MIR STAY
Astronaut David Wolf, who recently completed 119 days as
a crew member on the Mir space station, will discuss his
mission with reporters at a press conference beginning at 9
a.m. EST Thursday, Feb. 19. This will be Wolf's first media
availability since returning to Earth on board Endeavour on
Jan. 31.
Joining Wolf for the press conference will be Frank
Culbertson, manager of the joint U.S./Russian Phase 1 program.
The briefing will be held at NASA's Johnson Space Center,
Houston, TX.
Wolf was the sixth American to complete an extended stay
on board the Mir. He spent a total of 128 days in space, as a
member of the STS-86, Mir and STS-89 crews.
Media may participate in the question-and-answer session
at participating NASA centers. Media planning to attend the
briefing in person should notify the Johnson Space Center
newsroom no later than 4 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 18, for badging
and registration.
The briefing will be carried live on NASA Television.
NASA Television is available through the GE-2 satellite,
transponder 9C located at 85 degrees West longitude, vertical
polarization, with a frequency of 3880 MHz, and audio at 6.8
MHz.

NASA OUTLINES PLANS TO STUDY FEB. 26 TOTAL ECLIPSE
The Feb. 26 total eclipse will be visible from a narrow
corridor which begins in the Pacific, continues through the
Caribbean and ends off the Atlantic coast of Africa. Much of
the south and eastern U.S. will see a partial eclipse.
NASA's plans to study the eclipse include:
* Researchers from NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center,
Greenbelt, MD, will be among international teams of scientists
who will observe the eclipse from Curacao, Guadeloupe, and
Aruba, using solar telescopes to analyze the structure and
magnetic activity of the Sun's corona. Scientists are
available to discuss the upcoming solar eclipse. Contact Bill
Steigerwald, Goddard Public Affairs Office, 301/286-8955 (see
note below for live interviews on NASA TV).
* The NASA/European Space Agency's (ESA) Solar and
Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) spacecraft will assist eclipse
expeditions from around the world by making simultaneous
observations during the eclipse that will reveal a more
complete picture of what is occurring on the Sun. Contact Bill

* The NASA/ESA Ulysses spacecraft, now in polar orbit
around the Sun, will give scientists a "birds-eye view" of huge
loops of solar material tearing away from the Sun's corona.
These ejections of solar mass can be seen from ground-based
observatories during solar eclipses, but Ulysses' orbit above
the Sun's poles gives scientists another perspective from which
to better understand these potentially dangerous storms.
Ulysses scientists are available for interviews about the
upcoming solar eclipse by contacting Diane Ainsworth in the
Media Relations Office at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory,
Pasadena, CA, 818/354-5011.
NASA TV plans the following:
* An eclipse preview Video File will run on NASA-TV
several times in February. Elements in the Video File include
animation showing the path of the eclipse, some safe eclipse
viewing tips, and examples of how scientists use 'artificial'
eclipses to study the Sun's corona.
* NASA will offer live interviews with Art Poland of the
SOHO team. Dr. Poland will give eclipse viewing tips & fun
facts and explain how scientists use artificial eclipses to
continuously monitor the Sun's corona. The Live Shots are
scheduled the evening of Feb. 25 and the morning of Feb. 26.

* A time-lapse movie of the moon's shadow as it sweeps
across the Earth will be taken by the GOES satellite during the
four-hour event. If the images can be processed in time, NASA

SPACE TECHNOLOGY USED TO DETECT AND TREAT HEART DISEASE
Astronauts who spend extended periods in space often
experience weakening of their hearts and blood vessels. As
doctors and researchers work to understand why this happens,
many of their findings can be applied to heart disease. In the
month of February, when people's attention turns to matters of
the heart, and in recognition of American Heart Month, NASA
today highlighted how its research and technology has led to
breakthroughs in the understanding, diagnosis and treatment of
heart disease -- the number one killer of American men and women.
"I am proud that NASA research is helping doctors treat
heart disease," said NASA Administrator Daniel S. Goldin.
"This is a fascinating time for medical science, when the
developments of our aeronautics and space programs can be
applied to a disease that affects so many here on Earth."
Some startling facts:
* Heart disease is the leading cause of death of both men and
women in the United States.
* About 60 million Americans have high blood pressure. If left
untreated, it can lead to heart attacks, stroke and other
medical problems.
* Until very recently, heart disease has not been recognized as
a major risk for women. Since 1984, more women than men have
died of heart disease.
Whether researching ways to keep astronauts healthy in
space or transferring aerospace technologies to industry,
America's space program has helped revolutionize the practice
of medicine. NASA's research on the cardiovascular system is
leading to many breakthrough discoveries, testing procedures
and treatments. Many are less painful, less costly, and less
traumatic to patients. A few of today's space-derived
improvements include blood pressure monitors, self-adjusting
pacemakers, EKGs, exercise equipment and ultrasound images.
The technology of tomorrow will include microwave surgery,
tissue replacement, heart pumps, low radiation imaging, and
fetal imaging.
"Who would have dreamed that lasers used to measure
Earth's ozone layer could be used to unclog arteries," Goldin
continued. "If the past is our guide, our future in space will
continue to advance medical science."
NASA is working with the National Institutes of Health,
the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, dozens of
hospitals, researchers and private companies. These
collaborations have resulted in successful new programs to
diagnose and treat heart disease.

HUNTRESS ANNOUNCES HIS DEPARTURE FROM NASA
Dr. Wesley T. Huntress, Jr., NASA's Associate Administrator
for Space Science, has announced his departure from the Agency
in the near future.
Huntress is responsible for NASA's programs in
astrophysics, planetary exploration and space physics. "I have
served in this position for more than five years now," Huntress
said, "and it is simply time to move on."
"Wes Huntress has presided over a revitalization of NASA's
Space Science enterprise," NASA Administrator Daniel S. Goldin
said. "Five years ago, the Hubble Space Telescope had
problems, spacecraft costs were growing out of control, and
serious budgetary threats were clouding NASA's future in space
science. But during his tenure, thanks in no small part to the
magnificent team he assembled at the field centers and NASA
Headquarters, the Space Science enterprise has become one of
NASA's crown jewels.
"The Hubble Telescope has become the workhorse of cutting-
edge astronomy, and planetary exploration is now the province
of faster, better, cheaper missions such as Mars Pathfinder.
Through these efforts, even with constrained budgetary
possibilities in the years ahead, NASA will continue to be a
world leader in exploring the worlds beyond Earth. Much of
this achievement is due to the wisdom and skill of Wes
Huntress. We shall miss him."
Huntress was named to head the Office of Space Science in
March 1993. He began his career at NASA's Jet Propulsion
Laboratory (JPL), Pasadena, CA, as a National Research Council
resident associate in the 1960s. He joined JPL permanently in
1969 as a research scientist specializing in ion chemistry and
planetary atmospheres. Huntress and his research group gained
international recognition for their pioneering studies of
chemical evolution in interstellar clouds, comets and planetary
atmospheres.
NASA will begin a search for Huntress' replacement
immediately.

Cassini Significant Event Report
For Week Ending 02/20/98
MSO Significant Events input for week of Friday, 02/13 through Thursday,
02/19:
Spacecraft Status:
The Cassini spacecraft is presently traveling at a speed relative to the sun
of approximately 131,000 kilometers/hour (~82,000 mph) and has traveled
approximately 324 million kilometers (~202 million miles) since launch last
October 15.
The most recent Spacecraft status is from the DSN tracking pass on Thursday,
02/19, over Madrid. The Cassini spacecraft is in an excellent state of
health and is operating nominally, with the C6 sequence executing onboard.
Inertial attitude control is being maintained using the spacecraft's
hydrazine thrusters (RCS system). The spacecraft continues to fly in a High
Gain Antenna-to-Sun attitude. It will maintain the HGA-to-Sun attitude,
except for planned trajectory correction maneuvers, for the first 14 months
of flight.
Communication with Earth during early cruise is via one of the spacecraft's
two low-gain antennas; the antenna selected depends on the relative geometry
of the Sun, Earth and the spacecraft. The downlink telemetry rate is
presently 40 bps.
The spacecraft passed through Inferior Conjunction on February 9, with a
minimum Sun-Earth-Spacecraft angle of 4.2 degrees. Because the spacecraft is
held in a HGA-to-Sun attitude while in the inner solar system, the angle
from the Earth to the spacecraft's LGA falls farther off the LGA boresight
for the several weeks surrounding this geometric condition. During this
period, the Deep Space Net transmitters and the spacecraft telecom subsystem
are configured as necessary to direct signal strength either into Ranging
for Navigation or telemetry for spacecraft health monitoring. The need for
this additional management of spacecraft configuration ended on February 18.
Spacecraft Activity Summary:
From Friday, 02/13 through Tuesday, 02/17, the spacecraft was in the
ranging- only (i.e. telemetry off) configuration with the exception of
Saturday, 02/14, when telemetry was turned on for several hours to acquire a
track of data to monitor spacecraft health.
On Sunday, 02/15, the Solid State Recorder (SSR) record and playback
pointers were reset, according to plan. This housekeeping activity, done
approximately weekly, maximizes the amount of time that recorded engineering
data is available for playback to the ground should an anomaly occur on the
spacecraft.
On Wednesday, updates to spacecraft mass value and RCS thruster parameters
were sent to the spacecraft. These activities were performed as part of
standard preparations for Trajectory Correction Maneuver #2, scheduled for
February 25th.
On Thursday, 02/19, there were no changes in spacecraft configuration.
Upcoming spacecraft events:
Events for the week of 02/20 through 02/26 include: a reset of the SSR
pointers (02/20), uplink of the TCM #2 mini-sequence and a reset of the SSR
pointers (02/24), execution and playback of the TCM #2 mini-sequence
(02/25).
DSN Coverage:
Over the past week Cassini had 11 DSN tracks occurring daily from Friday
(02/13), through Thursday (02/19). One of these was for telemetry-only and
eight were for ranging-only. The final two passes of the past week had both
ranging and telemetry, as the geometry of the Inferior Conjunction period is
now behind us. In the coming week, in support of TCM-2, there will be 14 DSN
passes.
Letters of Agreement:
Agreements on funding levels and major tasks for each of the 24 scientific
investigations, including Program support for those investigations, have
been or are being prepared. Agreement has now been reached and Letters of
Agreement signed for 19 of the 24 investigations. The newest three include
the Cosmic Dust Analyzer, the Cassini RADAR, and the Huygens Surface Science
Package investigations.
