Не будучи ярым поклонником фотографии вообще, никогда не изучал возможности Фотошопа.
Теперь, когда нужно, учусь с нуля. Но часто многого не понимаю. Не всегда есть кто-то под боком, чтобы подсказать. Поэтому спрашиваю здесь.
При переводе с английского не ясно что и где нажимать (что именно имеется ввиду).
Вот один методов использования маски. Пункты 4 и 9 мне не понятны. Поэтому в итоге результат не тот, который должен быть. Если кто-то (даже не астрофотографы) хорошо знает Фотошоп, подскажите. 

1. Select > All. Edit > Copy. Open the original image. Copy it to the clipboard.
2. Edit > Paste. Paste the original as a layer on top of itself.
3. Layer > Add Layer Mask > Reveal All.
4. Alt Click on the layer mask icon in the layers palette.
5. Edit > Paste the original into the layer mask. It will turn into a black and white image.
6. Invert the mask. Image > Adjust > Invert.
7. Increase the contrast of the mask with curves. Image > Adjust > Curves. Move the black point from 0 to 64 and the white point from 255 to 223. The secret is in the adjustment of the mask in this step. These curves adjustments won't work with every image, experimentation will be necessary to determine the best mask for a particular image. The white point should be adjusted until the sky background to be adjusted is white. The black point should be adjusted to black to mask any parts of the image to be protected.
8. Apply a 1 pixel gaussian blur to the mask. Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur. The size of the blur will depend on the resolution of the image.
9. Click on the color thumbnail of the image in the layer with the layer mask in the layers palette.
10. Increase the contrast of the image by dragging the white point to the left in Image > Adjust > Levels. 11. The opacity of the layer can be adjusted for further control.
12. Flatten the image with Layer > Flatten Image.
