"The disturbance from a series of solar flares on the 18th of November was expected to arrive on the 20th, but the size of the events was one-tenth that of the events near Halloween. We predicted high activity, but did not issue an auroral alert. The magnitude of the magnetic cloud following the shock was more than twice as large, however, and the magnetic disturbance and auroras at
Earth were correspondingly larger for the first 12 hours after the arrival
around 0730 GMT. The magnetic field of the solar wind will probably now be directed northward for 12 hours (daylight hours across the US), so the development of aurora will be somewhat abated. The disturbance was great enough, however, to generate a magnetic storm that will be accompanied by auroral substorms
for the next two days.
It is difficult to predict the magnitude of these events, but auroras could occur all across the US, northern Europe,
Russia to 50 deg. "
