Utilize My 8i Nexstar To The Fullest

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone could give me some tips on utilizing my nexstar 8i to the fullest extent. I don't seem to be "seeing" certain objects such as the planets with the clarity that I feel I should have. With Mars being as close as it was this summer, I could not see detail, I was able to see bright lights at the poles but that was about it. I don't know if I am expecting to much to start off with or not. Please help.... any advice is useful. Thank you.
