I think the main problem is that the article you read is inaccurate. It states that matter is crushed out of existence when it enters the black hole.

In reality, the matter is never destroyed, but is more or less temporarily 'stored' in the black hole. When a particle falls into a black hole, it loses its identity (i.e. whether it was a quark or a photon, etc.), and it doesn't interact with the outside universe*, but the matter still exists in an infinitely small point in the universe. After time, the matter is eventually released back into the universe through Hawking Radiation, and no matter has been destroyed. A happy ending for all!

*Actually, the matter does have a slight effect on the outside universe when it is in the black hole because of the added gravitational strength it contributes.
