Book review submission guidelines

All book reviews appear only on our web site.
If you are interested in reviewing a recently published book you have read, please contact the book review editor. Your inquiry letter should tell us why you think the book should be reviewed, what (if anything) you know about the author or editor, and what your qualifications are for writing the review.

If we commission you to review a book, please make sure the review includes the following information about the book in this order:

Book title
Author(s) or editor(s)
Number of pages
Publisher and city and state of publication
Publication date
ISBN number
Hard or soft cover
Price

A look at any current issue will show the format we use.

Submit your completed review via our web-based form or mail it to:

Tips for authors
  • Catch the reader's attention with your lead.

  • Summarize the book's theme early on and mention whether or not the author successfully fulfills that theme.

  • Explain the author's credibility, background, expertise, etc.

  • Summarize the book's content briefly. Include an analysis of its format, writing style, reading style, thoroughness, factual accuracy, understandability, persuasiveness, overall quality of writing, and the purpose/message of the book.

  • Provide a few short quotes from the book, if appropriate.

  • At some point in the review, make it clear to whom the book will appeal — backyard observer, armchair astronomer, experienced or advanced amateur astronomer, etc.

  • Your review should leave readers with a clear idea of whether or not the book is for them.
