Van Cortlandt Park, The Bronx

The Amateur Astronomers Association of NY is happy to announce that astronomy observing sessions will now regularly be hosted in the Bronx at Van Cortlandt Park on the second Friday of each month, from February through November.�� Van Courtlandt Park is located along Broadway from 240th street thru 253rd street. The park has a clear 360�� view of the sky and contains various observing locations.
We meet in front of The Van Cortlandt Mansion, overlooking the Turtle & Hare ball field. ��If you enter at the 242nd Street entrance to the park you can turn left and follow the path to the Van Cortlandt Mansion on the right. All park entrances on Broadway lead you to the observing location.

As an added bonus, on select observing nights the Venue may instead move across Van Cortlandt Park to neighboring Woodlawn Cemetery where in conjunction with The Friends of Woodlawn Cemetery we will be able to take advantage of some of the darkest observing locations within NYC that are easily accessible from various modes of transportation. Observing events scheduled for Woodlawn Cemetery will be communicated at least 15 days in advance on our calendar.�� This is a unique experience for sidewalk astronomy and we hope to have more events made available at this stellar location.

We encourage anyone wishing to bring a telescope or binoculars��to do so, and if you require assistance learning to use your telescope, we ask that you please notify us beforehand so that we can research your scope and verify we have an expert available to assist.

Bus from Manhattan

The BxM3 express bus makes stops along Madison Avenue, between 26th and 99th Streets, then travels to Yonkers through the Bronx, You may take this to The Broadway & 246th Street stop then enter the park and take the path straight to the end and turn towards the left, continue following path on the left towards the Van Cortlandt House Museum.

Bronx Bus Directions:

Bx9 to Broadway & 242nd Street – Enter the park and head towards the left, continue following path on the left towards the Van Cortlandt House Museum.

Subway
#1 train to Van Cortlandt Park & 242nd. This station has no elevator access* . Exit the station via the left side exit, Enter the park and head towards the left, continue following path on the left towards the Van Cortlandt House Museum.

From Manhattan���s Eastside
FDR Drive North towards Exit 17, stay left and merge onto Harlem River Dr. , Continue on HRD north till you merge with 10th Ave. Merge right and take 10th Ave. to Broadway. Continue on Broadway till you get to 242nd street. Enter the park and head towards the left, continue following path on the left towards the Van Cortlandt House Museum.

From the Bronx
Take the Major Deegan Expy. North or South to Exit number 11. Turn Right onto Van Cortlandt Park South and proceed to Broadway. Turn Right On Broadway and continue straight to 242nd Street. Enter the park and head towards the left, continue following path on the left towards the Van Cortlandt House Museum.
