And the Latest Contest...

ASTRONOMY BOWL at Hidden Hollow

Think you know your star stuff?  Do you get psyched when you see that rare astronomy question on Jeopardy?  How'd you like to put your knowledge of the heavens to the test and walk away with a $50 gift certificate to OPT?

ASTRONOMY BOWL is the alternative for those that'd like to win a prize but never get that smile from Lady Luck come Raffle Time.  We encourage you, of course, to take your chances with our raffle prizes; you'll never win if you don't try.

But if you've always associated winning star party prizes with pure chance, ASTRONOMY BOWL breaks that notion in a big way.  Teams of up to 3 each will participate in an exciting question-and-answer forum that's guaranteed to give the ol' noggin' a workout.   Questions will cover a variety of astronomical areas, including recent events, the solar system, deep-sky objects, constellations, cosmology, famous astronomers and even some pop-culture.

For those that remember the game "College Bowl", the format is very similar.  A toss-up question is first asked, and any contestant may answer--but only that contestant, not any other member of their team.  If the toss-up is correctly answered, that team--and only that team--is eligible for a bonus.

To make matters easier on the organizers of Hidden Hollow, we ask that your team be registered by April 18, 2008.  If you've already registered for Hidden Hollow, just send in an email.

You can assign yourself a team name, if you'd like.  You can go with the geek angle (like, say, "The Dead Sea Squirrels") or go for the jugular (for example, "The Star Destroyers").  We only ask that you keep it clean.

We're looking forward to seeing you in May after a long, cold Ohio winter!

Clear Skies, and Good Luck!"

Contests

See the rules for Astronomy Bowl!

The latest-and-greatest  Astronomy trivia game!

Right now we're offering contests for ATM and Astrophotography. As you can see, our guests had a wonderful time touring the makeshift displays we had in 2006, and they we kind enough to suggest we have a contest!  Why not? So we did in 2007!  You asked for it again... Bring your astrophotos with you and a way to display them. We have plenty of room in the Sky View Lodge and a few ideas of how to honor you for your fine work! Because astrophotography is such a challenging field, we'll be sure to break the contests into categories, such as lunar, planetary, deep sky and youth. Bring your best!

Last year's 1st place winner - Robert Miller

Of course, we mustn't forget all the beautiful, handcrafted telescopes that were with us in years past. If you haven't had a chance to see some of these for yourself, you really should. Why not offer a contest for the best of the best? So we did!  And we're having one again!   We'll break it down into different branches... Perhaps youth, intermediate and expert?  You're the ones who build 'em... Let us honor you by bringing your scope to display! No one will be appointed a judge. Everyone who attends the star party will have an opportunity to vote on which scope he or she thinks is the best in each category. Winners will receive a beautiful commemorative certificate!

So how about it folks? Let's get a contest going for the astronomy group who brings the most members as well! Now,  how do you honor a group like that? Let's start by posing your group for a Kodak moment with our guest speakers and having them autograph it for the folks back home. This promises to be a great time for everyone and we're looking forward to seeing your group win!

If you are interest in joining a contest, just let us know when you arrive and we'll give you the appropriate materials to display with your entry. There is no fee for entering any contest and it's all about having fun! Look in your Visitor's Packet when you arrive for ballots so you can vote on each category. Winners of contests will be announced on Saturday afternoon before our Door Prize Drawing!
