The Center was created with the assistance of the Association of Bulgarians in Ukraine in 2005

The Center activity is aimed at meeting the following goals and purposes: maintaining the traditions of scientific Bulgaristics at the University through the development of priority areas including the study of history and culture of Bulgarian community in Ukraine; coordinating research efforts and focusing on topical areas of Balkanistics and Byzantine Studies in Ukraine; holding conferences symposia, readings, round-table conferences on topical issues of Bulgaristics, Balkanistics and Byzantine Studies; contributing to foreign internship programs in Bulgaria and South-East European countries for teachers and post-graduate students for conducting research; assisting students and other interested persons in learning and mastering Bulgarian and the Greek language; amassing a research library, an archive and a data base in Bulgaristics and Balkanistics; establishing direct contacts with universities and academic institutions in the humanities in Bulgaria and other countries of the region to carry out joint projects.

The Center Senate, headed by Doctor of Letters (History) M.H. Stanchev, comprises 11 Doctors of Letters, Full Professors and 15 PhDs, Associate Professors.

International Drinov Readings is the main conference and research forum of the Center, Drinov Conference Proceedings is the journal both of the Center and Ukraine-Bulgaria Historians Committee.

During 2007-2010 period the Center focuses its activity on carrying out three international projects with the Institute of History and the Institute of Balkanistics of Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, they are: Marin Drinov?s Epistolary Heritage; Bulgaria and Ukraine: from Eurasian Empires to European Union (mid 18th ? early 21st centuries); The Caucasus ? the Crimea ? the Balkans: between Islam and Christianity (late 18th ? early 21st centuries).
