Karazin University celebrating its 208th Anniversary
V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University celebrated its 208th Anniversary. The University held a number of festivities on the occasion. The festivities began with laying flowers at the Monument to the University founder with the participation of University President, Academician V. S. Bakirov, Vice-Presidents, Deans, faculty and students.
Within the framework of the celebration a grand meeting of the Assembly of the University Academic Councils was held. The Presidium comprised President, Academician V. S. Bakirov, Vice-President of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Director of the Institute for Economics and Forecasting of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Academician V. M. Heiets, Secretary of the Division of Nuclear Physics and Energetics of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, University Doctor Honoris Causa , Academician I. M. Nekliudov, Consul General of the Republic of Poland in Kharkiv Jan Granat, Consul General of the Russian Federation in Kharkiv S. O. Semenov, Second Secretary of the Embassy of Israel Neli Shulman and First Vice-President of Kharkiv Theological Seminary Archpriest V. M. Kovalchuk.
As is the tradition since 1806 the anniversary celebration is marked by the University President’s welcoming address. “This year I would like to emphasize the educational function of the University. Karazin University provides training to make its alumni successful in any filed. Karazin University is a shrine of science, a center for cultural and spiritual life,” said V. S. Bakirov in his welcoming speech.
Consul General of the Russian Federation in Kharkiv S. O. Semenov awarded V. S. Bakirov an honorary diploma for his considerable contribution to education and science development. “Karazin University is not only one of the oldest, but one of the most important universities in Ukraine. The University brings knowledge and I would like to wish our University community success in this walk,” said S. O. Semenov.
Traditionally during the festivities prestigious University decorations were awarded. The famous economist V. M. Heiets was awarded Doctor Honoris Causa of V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University for his significant contribution to education and science development The best University workers were also awarded prestigious prizes and Vasyl Karazin Medal for high achievements in academic, research and educational work.
For the occasion the University History Museum was holding a unique exhibition “’A minus ad major’: Notes telling their story” presenting documents and exhibits kept in the holdings of the Museum and the Division of Rare Editions and Manuscripts of the Central Research Library.
