Opening of Yermilov Center, a center of contemporary art

On March 22, 2012 there was held a grand opening of a new center of contemporary art — Yermilov Center. The new art center is situated in V.N. Karazin Kharkiv National University and is opened with the assistance of the University Alumni Association.

Along with the opening of the center, its first exposition «Construction. From Constructivism to Contemporary. Kharkiv, XX—XXI» was held. The project combines works of avant-garde artists Vasyl Yermilov and Borys Kosariev with such contemporary artists of Kharkiv as Pavel Makov, Hamlet Zinkivskii, Vitalii Kulikov, Alina Kleitman, Artem Volokitin and Roman Minin.

The art grounds were named after Vasyl Yermilov on the birthday of whom the art center was opened. Vasyl Yermilov was a famous resident of Kharkiv, creator of «industrial» art, pioneer of Ukrainian avant-garde and artistic construction in Ukraine. He was a talented and original artist whose creative works not only depicted the hardships of the first postwar years but also were a style-forming factor of the epoch. His numerous works (both practical and theoretical) were taken as a basis of contemporary Ukrainian and world's design. Foreign and national Museums have most of his heritage.

The Center supervisor, director of Kharkiv City Art Gallery Tetiana Tumasian pointed out that it is the first and so far the only center of contemporary art in Kharkiv.

The Vice-President of V.N. Karazin Kharkiv National University, Head of the University Alumni Association Yurii Valentynovych Kholin attended the opening. On behalf of the University community he congratulated everyone present on that outstanding occasion - the opening of Yermilov Center - and wished rapid development of that initiative. He also said he was glad that now the University academic community would have a center of contemporary art.
