International Winter School of High Energy Physics: Wrap-Up
An International Winter School of High Energy Physics was held at Karazin University on February 12-14, 2014. It included reports by experts from one of the best higher educational institutions of France and the world, the University of Paris-Sud XI (L’Université Paris—Sud XI), providing scientific support for experiments on the LHC (Large Hadron Collider).
A series of public lectures were read to the University students and the city scientists by Doctors of Sciences from the Linear Accelerator Laboratory at Orsay Science Center (France) Serhii Barsuk, Leonid Burmistrov, Marie-Hélène Shune and Doctor of Science Maksym Tytov from the Institute of Research into the Fundamental Laws of the Universe (the French Atomic Energy and Alternative Energies Commission).
The scientists’ reports tackled problems of modern physics: introduction to heavy flavor physics, charm physics, as well as applied problems of modern linear accelerators: flavor physics in the LHCb (Large Hadron Collider beauty) experiment at the CERN (Conseil Européen pour la Recherche Nucléaire, European Organization for Nuclear Research) and in future experiments, achievements in physics of gaseous detectors.
“The lectures are devoted not only to modern studies and experimental devices, but also to scheduled experiments in high energy physics as well, which is of immediate interest for students who are going to work in that field. The value of that kind of lectures is that you can ask questions to scientists who actively participate in research”, noted K. D. Synelnykov, scholarship holder, winner of the IX All-Ukrainian Student Tournament in Physics (2011), applicant for the European Physical Society (EPS) grant for participation in the Trans-European School of High Energy Physics, fourth-year student of the School of Physics and Technology Tetiana Moskalets.
One of the lectures was delivered to senior pupils of Kharkiv Lyceum of Physics and Mathematics No. 27 that the University actively cooperates with. It was read during the class of physics conducted by merited teacher of Ukraine, honorary citizen of Kharkiv Illia Helfhat.
