The department is chaired by Associate Professor Ihor Stepanovych Kravchuk, Candidate of philological sciences. Its staff consists of 4 associate professors, 6 senior lecturers, and a lecturer.

The department was established as the Department of Oriental Languages by the first Statute of the University in 1804 and in 1964 organized by Professor V.V. Akulenko, Corresponding Member of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, into the graduate department for the students who major in applied linguistics at the Faculty of Philology.

The graduates are awarded bachelor?s, specialist?s and master?s degrees in applied linguistics.

Areas of specialization include computational linguistics, comparative linguistics, scientific and machine translation, forensic and Internet linguistics, critical and classroom discourse analysis, language education, psycholinguistics, and sociolinguistics.

The department also provides courses in practical English, theory and practice of translation and supervises both pedagogical and translation practices for the applied linguistics majors, computer science for students majoring in philology and journalism, introduction into linguistics and general linguistics for the Department of Philology and the School of Foreign Languages.
