Department of paediatrics

The Faculty of Medicine of V. N. Karazin Kharkov National University has been existed since March 1993 (up to 2008 - Faculty of Basic Medicine). The Department of Pediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynecology composed of faculty was established in 1997. In 2008 it became a separate Department of Pediatrics. Since the formation of the Department of Pediatrics, it has been chaired by the Honored Worker of Science and Technology of Ukraine, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Korenev N.M.. Professor Korenev N.M. is the author of more than 250 scientific papers, 6 monographs, 7 patents. Under his guidance 15 candidates of medical sciences were trained, he was twice decorated with ?Znak poshani?, ?Vidminnuk ohoronu zdorov?ya" order and he was awarded to a silver medal for the best innovative project in the field of medicine of the Eastern region of Ukraine in 1997.

Staff of the department consisting of 6 doctors and 5 candidates of medical science involved in solving urgent problems of pediatric cardiology, rheumatology, infectious childhood diseases, in particular, the development of medioprophylactic measures for adolescents with primary arterial hypertension, the definition of the mechanisms of formation and progression of chronic cardiac failure in children and adolescents with myocardial pathology, a technology of prevention a progression of osteoarthritis against a background of inflammatory and dysplastic lesions of the joints in adolescents. The accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant has identified a new direction of research activities of the department: studying the health status of children and adolescents from families of radiation risk. A program of regular medical check-up of children that were born in the families of the Chernobyl accident liquidators and removed from the radiation-contaminated area has been developed. Problems of disabled children?s health with chronic somatic diseases, orphans and children deprived of parental care are studied and issues of their medical, social, psychological rehabilitation, vocational guidance, as well as medical and social provision are developed.

According to the tradition of classical university education, students take an active part in research starting from the second course. Their obtained results are reported on the meetings of student?s scientific society, scientific conferences and published in journals and collections of scientific works.

Starting from the 2 course at the department of pediatrics, the following disciplines are given for medical students: "Care" for 2-year students, "Nursing Practice" and "Propaedeutics. Pediatrics? for 3-yaer students," Pediatrics" for 4 and 5-year students, ?Psychiatry and narcology " and "Diseases of nervous system" for 4-year students, "Genetics" and "Pediatrics. Children infection? for 5-year students, "Childhood diseases" for 6-year students.

The teachers of the department published 732 scientific works including 12 monographs, 29 methodological recommendations, received 19 patents for inventions. Since the establishment of the department, 3 doctoral and 2 candidate's dissertation were defended.

Clinical, scientific and pedagogical work is carried out on the clinical basis of "Institute of Child and Adolescent Health Care, AMS of Ukraine?. On the basis the staff of the department annually holds a large amount of clinical work; they supervise and consult the sick children, organize, conduct and participate in scientific workshops, national and international conferences and congresses.

Each year, the department trained more than 500 students, many of whom are foreign nationals. Graduating students have a high level of vocational training and a comprehensive approach to solving patient?s problems. Today, our former students successfully work not only in Ukraine but also in countries near and far abroad.
