Information for applicants

The Department prepares Bachelors, Masters, Specialists ofšGeology. Term ofštraining isš4šyears. Preparation ofšMasters and Specialists ofšGeology isšprovided onšthe basis ofšthe Bachelor?s degree (term ofštrainingš? 1šyear).

Alumni ofšour Department successfully work atšresearch institutes and geological enterprises practically inšall CIS countries asšwell asšcountries ofšfar abroad.

History ofšthe Department

The Department ofšGeology was founded inš1863 when the new statute ofšKharkiv University was introduced, according tošwhich the Department ofšGeology and Paleontology emerged from the only existing atšthe time department, the Geological Department ofšMineralogy and Geognosy. The fist Head ofšthe new Department was elected Ivan Levakovskyi (1828?1893). Inš1880?1887šhe was also Dean ofšthe School ofšPhysics and Mathematics that comprised the geological departments atšthe time. Later onšsuch famous geologists asšprofessors M.šBorysiak, O. Hurov, D.šSobolev, V. Marydin worked atšthe Department.

The School has ašfield school laboratory (base) ofšgeological exploration and geophysics situated inšthe village Kamianka ofšIziumskyi district ofšKharkiv oblast. The laboratory consists ofšašpark ofšdrilling mobile units, premises for their storage (garages), three one-store buildings (dormitories) for faculty and guests ofšthe base. Ašseparate room (academic classroom) ofšthe laboratory isšoccupied byšthe unique Museum ofšGeology ofšIziumskyi district created byšthe joint efforts ofšthe lecturers ofšthe Department V. Kosmachov and M.šKosmachova. The laboratory onšthe bank ofšthe Siverskyi Donets River holds the legal right tošthe territory (grounds) used during the summer practice inšdrilling, geophysics, geo-mapping, hydrogeology. There are trailers equipped with beds available for students and faculty staying atšthe grounds. Food isšcooked onšmetal stoves under sheds, there are refrigerators. Ašmetal shed serves asšašcanteen. Ašshed connected tošpower supply isšerected atšthe grounds for students tošwork onštheir reports. Nošother higher educational institution ofšUkraine has ašbase like this oršanšopportunity tošconduct full complex geological training inšthe field, hold scientific geological excursions and carry out geological research that isšwhy the Department and the School spare nošefforts inšpreserving the laboratory and the training grounds.

Over the years ofšits existence the Department has trained experts inšgeology who work side byšside with geologists and researchers onšthe territory from Kamchatka and Sakhalin tošthe Carpathians and the Crimea, asšwell asšinšUrengoy and Murmansk inšthe north and who teach atšsecondary and higher educational institutions ofšRussia, China, Vietnam, Iran, Egypt, Bulgaria and Poland. Some alumni work inšthe USA and other countries

Inš1993 the Department created ašstudent research detachment for studies ofšthe structure ofšdifferent regions ofšUkraine whose purpose was search for gold and other mineral resources. Having nošfinancial support ofšany kind, the detachment has conducted eleven field expeditions tošthe Ukrainian crystalline shield, tošDonbas, Priazovye and Transcarpathian region.

Among our alumni there are laureates ofšLenin Prize: B.šVorobiov, discoverer ofšShebelynka, M.šPalei, discoverer ofšthe middle-Asian Klondike Muruntau gold deposit, V.šKrit, discoverer ofšthe biggest platinum deposit inšFar East, professor V.šMakridin, doctors ofšsciences V.šPalyvanov, I. Lapkin, Shch. Vasyliev, V.šIstomin and many others.

Faculty

Academics and research atšthe Department are ensured byšhighly qualified specialists, among whom there isšašfull professor and 7šassociate professors.

Academic Process

The Department has ašschool laboratory ofšgeo-mapping, geological exploration and geophysics situated inšthe village Kamianka ofšIziumskyi district ofšKharkiv oblast.

Tošbecome anšexpert inšgeology, students study compulsory humanitarian and socio-economic subjects suchšas: Philosophy, Culturology, Law, History ofšUkraine, Ukrainian Language, Foreign Language, etc.

The cycle ofšfundamental general scientific disciplines include Higher Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, Information Sciences inšGeoinformational Systems, etc.

Career-oriented disciplines are General and Field Geology, Historical Geology and Paleontology, Structural Geology, Geomorphology and Quaternary Geology, Geotectonics, Regional Geology and Geology ofšUkraine, General Stratigraphy, Mineral Resources Exploration and Survey, etc.

The Department ensures teaching ofšcareer-oriented optional courses: Geological Formations; Exploration Economy, Organization and Planning; Oil and Gas Geology; Ethallogeny and Structure ofšOre Fields; Oil and Gas Deposits Exploration and Survey; Micropaleontology; Geological Exploration and Safety Measures; History and Methodology ofšGeological Sciences; Drawing upšDrafts and Estimates; Methods ofšGeological Survey; Information Science; etc.

Future geologists acquire practical skills during their training practices and internships. Training practices are held along Donbas?Crimea route and onšašspecially equipped base inšthe village Kamianka ofšIziumskyi district ofšKharkiv oblast. Within the training practices inšgeneral geology held inšthe Crimea oršinšthe Carpathians the faculty ofšthe Department ensure that students have their drilling and geo-mapping training practices. Internships take place inšgeological organizations ofšUkraine, and the best students are sent abroad tošRussia, Egypt, Romania.

Research Areas ofšthe Department:

  • Mesozoic (Jurassic and Cretaceous) Brachiopoda (morphology, microstructure, tortoiseshells, stratigraphy, paleobiogeography);
  • Late Mesozoic Nanoplankton (Jurassic and Cretaceous);
  • Paleobiogeochemistry ofšthe fossilized invertebrate;
  • Geological Area Studiesš? studies ofšgeological and geographical natural landmarks.

Scientific papers address the following topics:

1. Lithology, mineralogy and geochemistry ofšTavriya flysch formation ofšthe Crimea and Jurassic deposits ofšthe Dniepr-Donetsk Basin.

2. Minerals ofšsilica ofšUkraine.

3. Regional geologyš? geology ofšKharkiv region.

These topics have been delved into inšabout 100 scientific articles, some ofšwhich written inšco-authorship with professor M.šLohvynenko, professor H.šKarpova and others.

Scientific works are also devoted tošgeological and geographical area studies and geological landmarks ofšKharkiv region. Over 50šarticles have been published onšthe topic.
