Materials Chemistry Department. Being a coeval of the University, it was established in 1805 as the Department of Technology and Commerce and after numerous reorganizations gets its current name in 2004.š During this long period a number of outstanding scientists contributed to its evolution; among them Academicians A. I. Kiprianov and L. M. Litvinenko, Professors V. F. Lavrushin and V. M. Tolmachev, and many others.

šššššššš Nowadays the Department teaches students of the School of Chemistry and School of Biology suggesting the following general courses: Informatics and information technologies, Chemical informatics and chemometrics, Ecology, Chemistry of polymers, Ecotechnology, Molecular modeling, Advanced physical chemistry, Toxicology, Organic chemistry. The major speciality of the Department is the "Design of materials and chemical informatics"; it also participates in training experts in two more specialities, "Pharmaceutical chemistry" and "Computational chemistry and molecular design".

šššššššš The Department keeps close contacts with many home and foreign colleagues, in particular from Taras Shevchenko National University of Kiev, M. V. Lomonosov Moscow State University, Institute for Surface Chemistry and Institute for General and Inorganic Chemistry of the National Academy of Science of Ukraine, University of Cambridge (United Kingdom), University of Arizona (USA), Campinasš University (Brazil) and others. Research carried out at the Department is coordinated by two Scientific Councils of the National Academy of Science, in Inorganic Chemistry and in Analytical Chemistry, and is concentrated in the following directions:

  • mathematical modeling, data analysis in chemistry, chemometrics;
  • quantum chemistry and computer design of substances and materials;
  • organo-silica hybrid materials;
  • reaction mechanisms and kinetics in solids and at surfaces;
  • heterocyclic organic luminophores.

Monographs, text-books and selected papers published by fellows of the department are reflected on its web-cite (http://www-chemo.univer.kharkov.ua).

šššššššš During last five years the Department actively participated in the organization of the following International Conferences and Seminars: "Topical points of materials chemistry", "Modern Physical Chemistry for Advanced Materials", "Chemical Education in XXI century: challenges and prospects", "Dynamics and structure in physics and chemistry", "Modern problems of physical chemistry and electrochemistry of solutions". The Department keeps the regular seminar "Modern physical and analytical chemistry for high-tech materials".

šššššššš The Department is headed by the Honored Scientist of Ukraine, laureate of the State Prize of Ukraine in the field of Science and Technology, ScD Professor Yu. V. Kholin. Other fellows are ScD Professor A. I. Korobov, PhD Associated Professors V.V. Ivanov, L.V. Miroshnik, A.P. Shkumat, PhD Lecturers A. V. Panteleimonov and I. V. Khristenko, assistant V. M. Kotlar. Each year the Department has several PhD students.
