Science and Education Work of the Department

One of the main purposes of the Department is preparation of highly skilled specialists in the fields of astrophysics, astrometry and space physics.

Features of the Study

Students of Astronomy and Space Physics Department study general courses of physics, mathematics and informatics.

Except classical astronomical courses ( General Astronomy, General Astrometry, Practical, and Theoretical Astrophysics, etc.), the cources of Plasma Theory, Radioastronomy, Solar and Comet Physics, Dynamics of Space Flying, etc. are given the substantiall attention here. Computer competence of students are under special consideration. All Bachellor's and Master's Term Papers are made with the help of computers. Our graduates is responsible in mastering of Windows and UNIX operation systems, using of the Internet, text editors, programs of numeral and analytical data processing, graphic packages, one or more programming languages (C/C++, Java, IDL, HTML, Pascal).

Students of the Department do it's own practical works and make Bachellor's and Master's Term Papers at the Department, in the observatories, Universities and Scientific-Research Institutes of other countries. Some of the Bachellor's and Master's Term Papers were awarded at the national competitions of students works. In 1995-2001 years with the assistance of students and post-graduates of the Department more than 50 scientific articles have been published, more then 100 reports have been given at the international conferences. Annualy 2-7 graduates of the Department become post-graduates.

You can find Department graduates in almost all the astronomical institutions of former USSR, in Scientific-Research Institutes, Educational Institutions, in Planetariums, and schools. Among over 500 Department graduates there are ~30 Doctors of Science, 130 Candidates of Sciences, 2 Member-Correspondent of Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) and 1 of Ukrainian one, 4 Ukraine State Prize laureates, Directors of science and industrial institutes.

Among them are such famous astronomers, as Dr. E.Ponomarev (Solar-Terrestrial Physics Institute of RAS), who predicted Solar wind phenomena; Dr. G.Nikolsky (IZMIRAN), who layed the theoretical and observation foundation of Solar Coronae and Chromosphere investigation; Dr. E.Gurtovenko, who was the famous expert on Solar photosphere; Corresponding Member of RAS V.Afanasev (former Director of the Special Astronomy Observatory(SAO) of RAS), and Drs. I.Karachentsev, V.Karachentseva, V.Lypovetsky and A.Mangos (SAO RAS and AO of Kyiv University) - famous specialists on the extra-galactical astronomy; Corresponding Member of RAS, Director of CrAO M.Steshenko - specialist in the field of Solar physics and astrophysical investigation from space probes and Yu.I.Izotov - an outstanding specialist on the investigations of the young blue compact galaxies.

A great deal of graduates and research fellows of the Department work in the leading science centres all around the World - Stantford University, Los-Alamos Laboratory, Glasgo University, Royal Technological Institute (Sweden), Ericcsson Telecom, etc.

A part of graduates work as bankers, taxation officers. There are deputies executives and leaders of political parties among them.
