MISSION WARNING

National Space Agency of Ukraine and
Astronomy and Space Physics Department
presents

Warning Mission
Ionosphere monitoring and studies of influence of earthquake on ionosphere

Mission and system requirements

Background and goals
The Second International Meeting on WARNING Mission
Spacecrafts
Payload instrumentation
Organization

Spacecrafts

Special space vehicles with extremely low level of the electromagnetic noise are constructed in design division "Yuzhnoe" (Dnipropetrovsk). Such satellites are suitable for measurements of ionospheric plasma parameters near the level of background noises. Materials devoted to the mission and system requirement have been distributed between project participants before (during the meeting in Budapest, 1996).

The present situation is that the basic satellite is planned to launch in a cluster with two other satellites as a piggy-back load: SAM and SEM. Subsatellite Active Monitoring and Subsattelite Electromagnetic Monitoring were proposed by Ukrainian scientists with cooperation with scientists from USA, Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Russia.

Main parameters of the "Warning" space vehicles are the followings:

Orbit - circular 600 km

Declination - 73.° 5

Composition - 1 satellite + 2 subsatellites

Weight base satellite 1550 kg,

subsatellites - 2 x 250 kg

Satellite orientation precision - better 1°

Angular stabilization velocity - less 0.005 ° /s

Active operation - not less 2 year

Rocket type - "Cyclone"

Payload instrumentation

At the moment the preliminary set of the base satellite and subsatellites scientific equipment is determined in order to investigate all ionospheric parameters mentioned in Table 1. Simulations measurement at three space vehicles are pl anned to separate spatial and temporal variations of ionosphere plasma parameters. Besides, the instruments with radio transmitters will be set on active apparatus to decrease the level of electromagnetic noise.

Base satellite AUOS-SM type

  • Instruments for temperature and concentration of electrons and ions measurement.
  • Energetic particles spectrometers (electrons, protons, ions).
  • Mass-spectrometers for neutral and ion composition of ionosphere measurements.
  • Optical instruments: IR and visible Fourier spectrometers, TV camera and two photometers. Two instruments (IR interferometer SICH-F and Imaging spectrometer FAGOT) utilize high-resolution interferometry that allows to study upper-at mosphere and ionosphere in light absorbed/emitted by atmospheric atoms and molecules.
  • VLF radioemission receiver
  • Wave complex for electric and magnetic field measurements.

Subsatellite Active Monitoring - SAM (MS-2 type)

  • Top-side sounder for electron density profile measurements above F layer maximum;
  • Two-frequency transmitter(150/400 MHz) for tomographic sounding of ionosphere;
  • Photometer for emissions of ionosphere measurements.

Subsatellite Electromagnetic Monitoring - SEM (MS-2 type)

Wide range of ground-based measurements during project implementation are planning too. There are: seismic measurements; precise measurements of electric and magnetic fields in Carpathian seismic regions; ionosphere parameters measureme nt , including non-coherent scattering radar; radiowaves propagation measurements, optic observations, etc.

Special attention will be paid to analyzing all collected data, both orbital and ground based measurements. The data from seismic world wide net, on solar activity, weather information, information on humans activity that can affect ion osphere must be analyzed in complex.

Flight operations are performed through Space Flight Center (SFC) in Yevpatoria institutional mission support systems. These facilities provide for satellite command and control, definitive orbit and attitude computations, command manag ement, and data capture.
