ENERGOSPECTROMETER OF IONOSPHERIC PLASMA P3-3
ENERGOSPECTROMETER OF IONOSPHERIC PLASMA P3-3

Measurement principle

The major objective of the P3-3 experiment is complex investigation the main parameters of ionospheric plasma with high time and spatial resolution. During special periods along SC orbit will be measured ion density Ni and electron temperature Te to investigate stationary and dynamic characteristics of the ionosphere

Experiment configuration and heritage

The experiment consists of:

Electronic block P3-3 (4 kg, 200´ 2010´ 180 mm, 5.0 W)

Sensor IPHP-A - block of 6 independent sensors (1.8 kg, 175´ 175´ 105 mm, 0.5 W)

Sensor SIT Spherical Ionospheric Trap (0.3 kg, diam. 100´ 240 mm, 0 W.

Main characteristics of the P3-3 instrument

Measured parameters:

Ion density Ni up to 1000 times per second

Ion temperature Ti up to 1 per second

Electron temperature Te up to 10 times per second

Masses of major ionosperic ions Mi up to 1 per second

Electron temperature anisotropy up to 10 times per seconds

Ion drift vector: direction ± 40 deg , magnitude up to 10 km/sec

Density fluctuation spectrum up to 2000 Hz

****************

  1. Diagnostic measurements of cold ionospheric plasma parameters aimed to explore possibility to reveal specific signatures of the earthquakes.
  2. Complex ionospheric plasma parameters measurements for the global monitoring of ionosphere behavior; these measurements can be used for studying both structure and dynamics of the ionosphere as a whole and for studying of specific physical processes in the ionospheric plasma.
  3. Detailed measurements of the main parameters of ionosphere with high time/space resolution...

These measurements will allow:

to make monitoring of the ionosphere (stationary state and dynamic characteristics);

to investigate specific physical phenomena in ionosphere - reaction on geomagnetic disturbances, main ionospheric trough, equatorial anomaly, polar cap phenomena, anomalous zones etc.;

to study thermal balance of the ionosphere;

to study ionosphere-plasmasphere interaction;

to correct IRI (International Reference Ionosphere Model).

Requirements to Telemetry

The experiment produce regular data - measured with fixed time interval and «packet» data - measured once per specific time interval and producing blocks of TM-information.

A few regular parameters of monitoring type (density and electron temperature) will be transmitted via SC main telemetry.

To transmit major bulk of data onboard fast telemetry memory is required which should allow:

reading data from the experiment by blocks of fixed size (to be defined by TM designer);

storing in the onboard memory with subsequent transmitting to the earth;

to provide timing of received data.

If all parameters will be measured once per second, the experiment will produce 10 MB per orbit. Reasonable space/time resolution may be obtained if a size of TM information allocated to the experiment will be 2, 5....3 MB per orbit.

Program and operation (from TM point of view)

Experiment starts to work when powered and can operate in all SC TM-modes. No special signals are required except of:

TM-interface signals;

information on TM-operation mode.
