Armagh Observatory

Observatory Releases aroundNorth Feedback Videos

aroundNorth Installation

The aroundNorth installation was permanently installed in the grounds of Armagh Observatory at the beginning of 2015. It was open to the public the following March. A portable version of the installation was then taken to a number of evocative locations around Northern Ireland during the ten days surrounding the official launch of the new installation in the Observatory Grounds.

As part of Creativity Month 2015 the Observatory arranged for a video record of these events. The three videos below show the installing of the permanent installation, the tour of the portable version of aroundNorth covering the different locations in Northern Ireland, and also public feedback from their experience of visiting the observatory.

aroundNorth is a product of the Beyond Borders programme, a co-commissioning and touring programme run in partnership with PRS for Music Foundation, the Arts Council of Northern Ireland, Creative Scotland, the Arts Council of Wales and Colwinston Trust. Beyond Borders stimulates collaboration between organisations in England, Northern lreland, Scotland and Wales and enables music creators to produce exceptional new material to be performed in at least two UK countries. aroundNorth provides new links between art and science, music and outdoor culture. It makes a tangible contribution to the Northern Ireland Executive's Innovation Strategy, supporting creativity across science and the arts and strengthening the traditional Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) agenda by including Art, and so supporting the Executive's 'STEAM' strategy.

The Observatory's involvement in Creativity Month 2015 was supported by funding from the Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure. Events in Londonderry were also supported by the DCAL's North West Social and Economic Development programme. The Observatory thanks all those involved in these active elements of public engagement, especially the principals and teachers of the Royal School Armagh and St Cecilia's College, Derry; the lecturers who delivered interesting and well attended public lectures, and Robert Jarvis and the PRS for Music Foundation for creating and supporting the production of aroundNorth
