Dull, Cool February; Winter 2014/2015 Sunnier, Cooler and Wetter than Average

Armagh Observatory reports that February 2015 was duller and slightly cooler than average, and that the meteorological winter, that is, December 2014, and January and February 2015, was sunnier, cooler and wetter than average.

The total number of hours of strong sunshine recorded during February at Armagh was just 61.7, slightly less than 90% of the most recent (1981тАУ2010) 30-year average sunshine for February, namely 69.1 hours. The sunniest day was the 21st, with 6.0 hours of strong sunshine.

February was also cooler than average, with a mean temperature of approximately 4.1 degrees Celsius, nearly 0.9 C cooler that the most recent (1981тАУ2010) 30-year average February temperature at Armagh.

The warmest day (highest maximum air temperature) was 13.0 C on the 18th; and the coolest night (lowest minimum air temperature) was -6.0 C on the 4th. That night also produced the lowest ground temperature for the month, with a lowest grass-minimum temperature of -11.4 C. The warmest night (highest minimum temperature) was 4.8 C, occurring on the 19th. There were 17 nights with ground frost and 12 with air frost.

Total precipitation for February was close to average, with 54.15 mm including 9 trace values. The wettest day was the 15th, with 9.6 mm of rainfall.

Overall, the meteorological winter, that is, December 2014, and January and February 2015, was sunnier, cooler and wetter than average. There was a total of 182.4 hours of strong sunshine, which is nearly 16% more than the most recent (1981тАУ2010) 30-year average for winter sunshine at Armagh. The average temperature over the three months was 4.1 degrees Celsius, approximately 0.74 C cooler than the most recent (1981тАУ2010) 30-year average winter temperature at Armagh, and the total precipitation was 238.65 mm including 23 trace values. This winter was approximately 15% wetter than the most recent (1981тАУ2010) 30-year average winter precipitation at Armagh.
