Leverhulme Professor Arrives at Armagh Observatory

The Armagh Observatory is pleased to announce that the Observatory has been awarded a prestigious Leverhulme Visiting Professorship, to bring Professor John Landstreet of the University of Western Ontario, London, Canada, to the Observatory for an eight-month academic visit starting in January 2009.

The Leverhulme Trust awards about a dozen of these Visiting Professorships each year in the basic sciences, to bring distinguished visitors from abroad to UK universities and other leading academic institutions such as Armagh Observatory.

Professor Landstreet is an internationally known astronomer with expertise in observations of stars and the study of stellar magnetic fields. While he is in Northern Ireland, Professor Landstreet will collaborate on research projects with other astronomers in Northern Ireland, and especially with his host, Dr Stefano Bagnulo, a staff astronomer at the Armagh Observatory. He is expected to give public lectures about the nature of stars, in Armagh and Belfast, as part of the Observatory's involvement in the 2009 International Year of Astronomy, and will deliver a series of advanced "Leverhulme" lectures and seminars to staff and post-graduate astronomy students at the Observatory and in several universities around the UK.

FOR FURTHER INFORMATION CONTACT: Stefano Bagnulo at the Armagh Observatory, College Hill, Armagh, BT61 9DG. Tel.: 028-3752-2928; FAX: 028-3752-7174; sbaat signarm.ac.uk.
