Armagh Weather January 2009

Driest February for Ten Years

Armagh Observatory reports that February was drier and slightly warmer than average. The total precipitation for the month was 19.2 mm (0.76 inches), that is, about one-third of the average. This was the twelfth driest February since the Observatory began measuring daily rainfall totals in 1838. There have been two drier Februaries in the last fifteen years, namely 1998, when the total rainfall was 15.68 mm, and 1993 (total rainfall 17.36 mm). In the first third of the February 2009, there were six days with snowfall.

The mean monthly temperature was 5.3 degrees Celsius (41.6 degrees Fahrenheit). This is slightly cooler than we have recently become accustomed to, that is the average of the last ten years, but warmer than the long-term average since 1795. The maximum temperature was 14.2 degrees C on the 23rd, and the lowest air temperature was -2.9 C on 8th. There were eleven nights with grass frost and eight with air frost.

The number of hours of sunshine was 59.2, that is, almost 10% less than the monthly average.

These data refer to observations at Armagh Observatory, which has been recording the weather at Armagh since 1795.
