International Telescope Society Visits Armagh
The international Antique Telescope Society will hold its 11th annual convention in Dublin from 20 to 25 September, visiting Armagh on Tuesday 24 September. The members have a full itinery, including two lectures, a tour of the Armagh Observatory, and an evening reception hosted by the Armagh City and District Council. The reception will be followed by a "living history" description of the Palace and Chapel, formerly occupied by Archbishop Robinson.
The two lectures, which are free and open to the public, will be held in the Rotunda Theatre, St Patrick's Trian at 3.00 pm. The first lecture will be given by John Butler, Armagh Observatory on: "The History of the Armagh Observatory" , and the second by Peter Hingley, Royal Astronomical Society, London on: "The Historic Astronomical Instruments from King George III's Collection at Kew".
The Antique History Society brings together those interested in historic telescopes, binoculars, scientific instruments, books, atlases and related items. The Society promotes the study of the history of astronomy and astronomical discovery, the history of optics, and the preservation and use of antique instruments through stewardship and education. The Society, which was founded in 1992, has an international membership of over 180 from eleven countries.
