Visit by the Director of Belgrade Observatory
The Director of the Belgrade Observatory in Yugoslavia, Dr Milan Dimitrijevic, will visit the Armagh Observatory for five days from 3 August to discuss common research projects and future collaborations. After his visit he is scheduled to give an invited talk at the General Assembly of the International Astronomical Union, to be held in Manchester for two weeks from 9 August.
Dr Dimitrijevic is a world expert in applying atomic physics to the interpretation of astronomical spectra from distant stars and galaxies. He was also the Minister of Science in the Yugoslavian Federal Government from 1991--1994. During a research career which has spanned more than 25 years he has developed research collaborations and links with astronomers in many countries, including Russia, France, and the UK.
Dr Dimitrijevic has had a keen interest for many years in advancing public understanding of science, and is a long-standing member of Rotary International. In addition to giving a specialist talk at the Armagh Observatory he will also speak to the Armagh Rotary Club in the Charlemont Arms, on Monday 7 August. The subject of his talk will be ``Rotary in Yugoslavia''.
