October 1994				Ph.D. in astronomy at the Sternwarte der Universität Bonn (Bonn University Observatory), thesis ``Hot subdwarf stars in binary systems'' on analysis and interpretation of UV and optical stellar spectra, disentangling multiwavelength data, and involving statistical tests. Second subject for Ph.D. exam: "Strahlenbiologie" (effects of ionizing radiation on biochemical molecules, cells, organisms, and related pathology)
September 1991				Diploma in physics at the Sternwarte der Universität Bonn (Bonn University Observatory), on stellar spectroscopy and photometry of hot subdwarf stars. Exams on theoretical physics (theoretical mechanics, quantum physics, thermodynamics and statistical mechanics), applied physics (electronics and laser spectroscopy), experimental physics (high energy physics), and astronomy (stellar evolution, open and globular clusters, galaxies, and galaxy clusters).
1987				german 'Vordiplom' in physics, followed by main studies concentrated on astrophysics and theoretical physics.
1985				started studying physics at Bonn University, 'Abitur' (german highschool exam and university qualification) finished at the St. Michael Gymnasium, Monschau, exams in the subjects physics, mathematics, geography, and russian.

Languages				german (mother tongue) english (speaking, reading and writing fluent, long time resident in Ireland and UK (1997 - 2004) also: spanish (reading, fair, easily expandable, one year residence in Madrid) russian (basic knowledge, 3 years training at school - writing and reading only) french (basic, DELF A1 exam, courses at the Institute Francaise in Bonn and at the Alliance Francaise in Dublin) ...well, and there have been 4 1/2 years of latin at school.
astronomy				observing experience with telescopes at Calar Alto, Spain (1.2m, 2.2m, 3.5m with photoelectric photometers, CCD imaging cameras, CCD spectrographs B&C and Twin), La Palma, Spain (NOT (2.4m), JKT (1.23m) with CCD imaging cameras), La Silla, ESO Chile (1m, 2.2m with infrared photoelectric photometer and CCD camera/spectrograph) MSSSO, Australia (40 inch with CCD imaging camera), IUE satellite time (low- and high resolution spectroscopy), Hoher List, Univ. of Bonn (1m with experimental CCD camera). Data reduction of all data aquired with instruments above and multi-object fibre spectrograph, using IRAF, IDL, MIDAS, and supporting routines written by myself.

Computing				This section lists courses I participated in and experiences I gained. The experience levels are split depending on a) as to how much I needed certain skills in my job, and b) private interests SunU and Beckinridge courses in Solaris System Performance Management, Solaris System Administration I and II, C++ object-oriented programming, Java programming, XML, distributed programming with Java. Experience in (those marked * lie further in the past): VAX () and Unix (and similar) operating systems, shell scripting, Perl (also ::CGI and ::Tk), development management with CVS, Fortran (), C web design using CSS and CMS (Mambo) as well as plain HTML Some experience in C++ and Java In my astronomy job, I gained significant experience in the use of IDL (Interactive Data Language - procedural, OO graphics, and programming of GUIs), IRAF () (Image Reduction Analysis Facility), MIDAS () (Munich Image Data Analysis System).
