Observations with the Faulkes Telescopes

Faulkes Telescope Observations

(3200) Phaethon

Minor planet (3200) Phaethon. Images obtained using the Faulkes Telescope North, operated by Las Cumbres Observatory. Click on image to enlarge.

During a work experience project at Armagh Observatory from 2014 December 1st to 5th, secondary school students from Armagh, Newry, Belfast and Craigavon used the Las Cumbres Observatory Global Telescope Network to plan and obtain observations of astronomical objects, and process and measure the resulting images. Among the targets observed was (3200) Phaethon, the asteroidal (cometary?) parent object of the Geminid meteor shower. We measured the positions of these comets and near-Earth asteroids and other objects, and submitted the results to the Minor Planet Center.

We are most grateful to the Faulkes Telescope Project and Las Cumbres Observatory for letting us have this telescope time and making these observations possible.
