James Aumonier: Sheep washing in Sussex

Aumonier, R.I., James 1832 - 1911

Sheep washing in Sussex

exhibited 1889, oil on canvas support: 959 x 1657 mm
Tate Gallery
Presented by the Trustees of the Chantrey Bequest 1889 No. 1619

From a note dated "March 1965"i
The exhibition of watercolours by Aumonier at the Leicester Galleries in March 1908 contained a study entitled "Sheepwashing". Another painting of the same subject was purchased for the Art Gallery of South Australia, Adelaide, in 1899 and is described in the 1926 catalogue as a "a scene on the South Downs between Arundel and Amberley" (No. 129, repr. p.53). It is possible that this was painted in the same locality as No. 1619, but looking the other way towards the downs. The arist was living at East Harting, Petersfield, in 1884 and at Steyning, Sussex, in 1887, and continued to exhibit Sussex scenes in the 'nineties.

This painting has been reproduced, first by the National Gallery as a print, and subsequently by the Tate Gallery as a postcard.
