Irish scientists will be involved in five science themes which the global heliophysical community aims to study during IHY 2007:

  2. тАвTheme 2: Energy transfer and coupling in solar and planetary atmospheres.
  3. тАвTheme 3: Flows and circulations of solar system gases and fluids.
  4. тАвTheme 4: Boundaries and interfaces in shock waves.
  5. тАвTheme 5: The 3-D coupled solar-planetary-heliospheric system.
We already participate in many space missions to study the Sun and the Heliosphere, including:
  1. тАвSOHO (ESA/NASA) - Exploring the basic physics of the Sun and how it effects Earth.

  3. тАвHinode (JAXA/PPARC/NASA) - Launched
  4. from Japan in September 2006 to study explosions on the SunтАЩs surface.

  6. тАвSTEREO (NASA) - Making humankind's first 3-dimensional images of the Solar atmosphere, using two identical spacecraft.

  8. тАвSDO (NASA) - Giving real time images of weather on the Sun.

  10. тАвRHESSI (NASA) - Imaging highest energy X-ray explosions on the Sun.

  12. тАвTRACE (NASA) - The finest detail images of the solar atmosphere.

There are three main research groups studying the Sun and the Heliosphere in Ireland:
