Archives and Sp ecialist Collections of Armagh
As part of European Heritage Open Days (EHOD), the libraries, museums and academic institutions of Armagh have arranged to display some of their fascinating archival and heritage material. This year, the exhibitions follow the theme of the UK and Ireland Archive Awareness Campaign `Routes to Roots'. Tours of each facility and their exhibitions are provided free of charge from Monday to Friday 6­10 September and Saturday 11 September 2004. Telephone to confirm opening hours and times of tours. The institutions, grouped by location in and around Armagh, are as follows:
· Armagh County Museum. Home to a unique collection of material reflecting the lives of people who have lived, worked or been associated with County Armagh. The library includes the writings of T.G.F. Paterson, the first Curator of the Museum, which are a rich source for the study of local history. Located on the East side of the Mall. Tel: 028-3752-3070. Open from 10:00­13:00 amd 14:00­17:00. · The Royal Irish Fusiliers Museum. One of the foremost libraries on Irish military history outside of Dublin. Among the many fascinating books are eight large volumes that comprise "Ireland's Memorial Record". These do not simply list all the thousands of Irish dead from the First World War as each page is individually illustrated. Only 100 sets were privately printed in the early 1920s, and this is one of only two complete sets still in existence. Located on the Mall, opposite the Courthouse and the driveway leading to the Armagh Observatory. Tel: 028-3752-2911. Open from 14:00­17:00. · The Armagh Observatory. A modern astronomical research institute with a rich heritage, founded in 1791 by Archbishop Richard Robinson. Main driveway opposite the Royal Irish Fusiliers Museum, on the north-east corner of the Mall. Tel: 028-3752-2928. Tours at 10:00, 11:00, 12:00, 14:00, 15:00 and 16:00. · The Armagh Public Library. `The Healing Place of the Soul', founded in 1771 by Archbishop Richard Robinson. The nucleus of the collection is Archbishop Robinson's personal library which contains 17th and 18th century books on Theology, Philosophy, classic and modern literature, voyages and travels, history, medicine and law. Located at 43 Abbey Street, Armagh, close to the Church of Ireland Cathedral. Tel: 028-3752-3142. Open from 10:00­ 13:00 and 14:00­16:00. · The Queen's University Belfast, Armagh Campus. Located in the former Armagh County Infirmary, founded in 1774 by Archbishop Richard Robinson, and home to both the Cardinal Cahal Daly Library and the Irish and Local Studies Library. The Cardinal Daly archive contains more than 10,000 books, mostly of theological, philosophical, and Irish historical and cultural interest. The Queen's University Armagh Campus is at 39 Abbey Street, close to the Armagh Public Library and the Church of Ireland Cathedral. Tel: 028-3751-0678. Open from 09:00­17:00. · The Irish and Local Studies Library. Located in Queen's University Armagh, close to the Armagh Public Library and the Church of Ireland Cathedral. The library covers all aspects of Irish life and learning from earliest times to the present day, and offers full reference facilities to researchers. Tel: 028-3752-7851.
