Main-sequence Stars

After formation, stars spend the major part of their lives converting hydrogen to helium in their cores. Since the colours and brightnesses of such stars follow a simple relation, the vast majority of stars are known as `main sequence' stars. Their surfaces are frequently seen to vibrate, a property which enables astronomers to deduce information about their interiors. Simon Jeffery and Myron Smith (Space Telescope Science Institute, Baltimore, USA) have continued to study the physics of surface oscillations in the $\beta$ Cepheid star BWVul. They are investigating empirically how a shock wave can affect the temperature and density structure of a stellar atmosphere as it passes through.
