The process of reducing observations from both Armagh Observatory and
Nyrölä Observatory, Jyväskylä, Finland, as part of a worldwide
campaign to record mutual eclipses and occultations of the four Galilean
satellites of Jupiter in 2002-2003 was started. 14 lightcurves were
obtained from data obtained at Nyrölä Observatory, using a
modification of an IDL script provided by Amir Ahmad as a prelude to
reducing the Armagh data itself. The latter dataset consists of
observations of approximately 17 discrete events, each covered by
1000 frames on average together with calibration frames. The first
Armagh lightcurves, taken at 15, 18 and 25 March 2003, were generated at
the end of the year. One of these events coincided with an event observed
also at Nyrölä Observatory, which provided an opportunity to establish
the quality of the Armagh data in terms of noise, systematic errors and so
on. The results are shown in Figure 4, which demonstrates
the fidelity of the Armagh data, the feasibility of observing phenomena of
this type from the Armagh site, and the potential increase in data quality
given a larger aperture and suitable upgrades in instrumentation.
Reduction of these data will be completed in 2004, when the final dataset
will be sent to the central mutual event data repository at the Institut
de Mécanique Céleste et de Calcul des Éphémérides (IMCCE), the
former Bureau des Longitudes in Paris, as has already been done for the
Nyrölä Observatory data.
