Introduction

The Armagh Observatory recognizes that honesty is an essential component of scholarly activity. All researchers have a duty to society, to their profession, to their employer, and to those funding their research, to conduct their research in the most conscientious and responsible manner possible. The Committee on Standards in Public Life -- the Nolan Committee -- identified seven principles which have relevance to best practice in the conduct of research: selflessness, integrity, objectivity, accountability, openness, honesty and leadership. These principles together provide a foundation for the personal integrity required in the professional conduct of research.

The purpose of this Code of Good Practice and Scientific Misconduct Procedure is to inform members of staff, visitors, consultants and associates of the Armagh Observatory (``members of the Armagh Observatory'') of the standards expected of them in the conduct of their work and to provide information on the procedures to follow if a situation arises in which staff are required to act in any way which is believed by them to be illegal, improper, or in breach of this code.

In the event of any conflict between the implementation of this Procedure and Human Rights legislation, the latter shall prevail.
