From: TerryMoselaol.com Date: 5 September 2006 20:20:30 BDT Subject: Lunar Eclipse, IAA at WWT, IAA meeting, Planetarium job Hi all, 1. PARTIAL LUNAR ECLIPSE: A rather unremarkable partial lunar eclipse occurs at twilight on Thursday 7 September. The Moon will rise already partially eclipsed: it rises at 20h 03m BSTйfrom Belfast, with the greatest part of the eclipse already over - maximum eclipse is at 19.51 BST. It rises a bit earlier from Dublin - about 19.48 - but a bit later the further West and North you are. Best observing location would be Wexford. And it's only a small eclipse anyway, with only about 6 arcminutes, or about 1/5 lunar diameter, of the N limb of the Moon being eclipsed. The partial phase ends at 20.38, so you might just see the tail end of the partial phase by the time the moon gets high enough to be observable from most locations. One other detail is that the Moon will be very close during the eclipse - in fact it will be closest to Earth on 8 Sep at 04.07 BST, at only 357,177 km from Earth, making that Full Moon the closest of the year. But the eclipse itself is one of largely academic interest, I'm afraid.... 2. IAA at WWT. The highly successful annual Green Living Fair will be held at the Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust, Castle Espie, Comber, Co Down, on Sat 16 & Sun 17 September. The theme is all about sustainability & minimising our environmental impact on the Earth. The IAA will have a stand there, promoting the themes of: Earth as a planet, Greenhouse effect (Venus as an example), comparison with other planets e.g. Venus & Mars, energy from other SS bodies, light pollution, solar energy, solar effects on climate, atmospheric phenomena (aurorae, meteors rainbows etc), & anything else in astronomy & space related to the theme. We'll have telescopes on display, a solar oven or two, DVDS, & other exhibition material. Come along & help out, or just to see. If you come by bicycle, you get in free! For further details see: www.wwt.org.uk/visit/castleespie/LargeGLF.pdf 3. FIRST IAA MEETING OF NEW SEASON: The first meeting of the Irish Astronomical Association's new season will be on Wed 20 September, 7.30 p.m., Stranmillis College, Belfast. Dr Lars Lindberg Christensen, head of the ESA section on the Hubble Space Telescope, will be giving us an illustrated talk on the achievements and future of this remarkable instrument - not to be missed! (Thanks to Robert Hill of Armagh Planetarium for helping lay on this lecture.) Free admission, including light refreshments. All are welcome. See http://www.meteorlogni.com/iaa/ 4. PLANETARIUM JOB, Birmingham. Mario di Maggio, formerly at Armagh, has asked me to circulate this, in case anyone is interested: "Please can you distribute details of this exciting new opportunity at Thinktank to anyone you think may be interested (see PlanetariumPresenterJob.doc) Thank you Mario Di Maggio; Planetarium Manager & Secretary: British Association of Planetaria Thinktank Birmingham Science Museum Millennium Point Curzon Street Birmingham B4 7XG e: mario.di.maggio
