Subject: IAA & Robinson Lectures; Lindsay Centenary

1. IAA Lecture: The next IAA public lecture will be by Deirdre
Kelleghan, President of the IAS, on Wednesday 15 November, in
Stranmillis College, Stranmillis Road, Belfast. The title will be "JPL's
Robot Explorers" and it will look at some of the amazing spacecraft of
the USA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, which are exploring the Solar
System. It's at 7.30 p.m., admission free, including light
refreshments, and all are welcome.

ARMAGH OBSERVATORY: Prof Mark Bailey, Director of Armagh Observatory,
asked me to circulate the following details:

2. The 2006 Robinson Lecture will be delivered by Professor Eric Priest
FRS, of the School of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of
St. Andrews. The lecture will begin at 7.30 pm on Friday 24 November
2006 in The Synod Hall, Abbey Street, Armagh,r йand is scheduled to end at
9.00 pm, followed by light refreshments.

The title and abstract of Professor Eric Priest's lecture are: "Our
Enigmatic Sun"  For centuries mankind in societies such as the
ancient Egyptians worshipped the Sun, and today modern observations from
space have shown that the Sun is much more puzzling than we realised.
Indeed, most of the fundamental properties of the Sun (which have
important implications for the rest of astronomy) are not yet
understood.  The lecture will introduce you to the main properties of
the Sun and will describe many of the modern puzzles, using the latest
images and movies. It will also describe a trip the author took to Egypt
to watch a solar eclipse, and will describe observations of huge
ejections of mass from the Sun and their effects on the Earth. 
Attendance at the Robinson Lecture is free, but if you would like to

I would also draw your attention to a future public event to mark the
centenary of Dr Eric Lindsay, former Director of Armagh Observatory.
This will be held in St. Patrick's Trian, Armagh, on Friday, 26th
January 2007.  The one-day conference will be followed by a public
lecture to be given by Dr Allan Chapman (University of Oxford): "Robert
Ball: Ireland's Astronomical Muse". More details on this event will be
circulated later.
