Subject: Eclipse success, TV Lectures, Star Night, COSMOS 06

Hi all,

I got back here late on Sunday evening after a diversion from Amsterdam via Sussex 
to see the original 'Television Astronomer' after his recent operation to have a pacemaker 
fitted. He's in better health now, and in fairly good spirits, although he still has very 
limited mobility. His appetite is certainly OK, as a large Indian meal rapidly disappeared 
off his plate on Saturday evening! He had just finished putting together the Sky At Night 
programme on the eclipse with Chris Lintott as I arrived on Saturday afternoon (see item 
2 below). Chris and the Sky At Night Team were based at Side, very close to IFAS at Manavgat.
   It was cloudy that evening, so no observing, but I did get a look at the Sun with his nice 
5" Cooke refractor next morning - I counted 14 spots in 3 groups, including the largish one 
we saw during the eclipse, so activity has picked up a bit.
   I was able to repay his hospitality & make myself useful by doing a few minor repairs & 
maintenance jobs on his 'scopes & domes, as of course he can't do that himself now.
   He sends his best wishes to all his friends in Ireland.

1. Hope everyone got home safely after the various trips to see the eclipse? The IFAS Group 
of 140+ (counting last minute additions) had a perfect view from near the centre line at 
Manavgat: looking out over the sea, we saw the shadow rush towards us, then engulf us in a 
spectacular totality! Highlight for me was the absolutely brilliant Diamond Ring at the end 
of Totality (as I had predicted from Fred Espenak's lunar limb profile), and the almost 
continuous chain of prominences round the lower limb as totality ended.
   Thanks to David Bell for all his help in the organisation - sorry you weren't able to be 
with us, David.
   Roll on Novosibirsk on 1 August 2008 - but it's someone else's turn to organise that one!

Armagh Observatory, by Professor David Southwood, Director of Science at ESA: "Space Science in

PUBLIC ASTRONOMY EVENING:
6. Friday 7 April: The next IAA public astronomy evening will be at Carnfunnock Country Park, 
Drains Bay, A2 Coast Road, North of Larne, Co Antrim, commencing at 8 p.m. We'll have the usual 
selection of telescopes and binoculars for sky viewing, plus an exhibition and talks, and a mini 
night-sky projector. We'll also have a talk by Derek Heatly on his recent near-space flight and 
weightlessness, and his forthcoming actual space flight (all being well!). Free admission for IAA 
members bringing telescopes etc.
