Subject: Death of D. Sinden, Radio & TV

Hi all,

1. Many of you will have met, or know of, David Sinden, who took over the
Grubb Parsons optical company operations when the company closed. It's with
great sadness that I have to inform you of his death, after a longish illness,
last Monday, 29 August. After many many efforts I was finally able to get him
to come to Belfast to give a totally fascinating lecture to the IAA a few
years ago.
He was Chief Optician at Grubb Parsons for many years, and was
responsible for many hundreds of optical systems, both lenses & mirrors, including some
of the world's largest optics, such as the 4.2-metre (165-inch) mirror for
the William Herschel Telescope, the 3.9-metre (153-inch) mirror for the
Anglo-Australian Telescope, and the new corrector plate for the 48-inch Oschin
Schmidt at Mount Palomar.
He had recently done a lot of work on restoring or renewing the optics
for the various telescopes at Armagh Observatory. A true amateur astronomer, as
well as a telescope optician sans pareil, he will be sorely and sadly missed.

Terry Moseley
