Subject: Aurora alert, IAA at the Argory, Lecture
Hi all,
1. Giant sunspot 798/808 flared twice more yesterday, and at least one of
the X-class explosions propelled a coronal mass ejection (CME) toward Earth.
NOAA forecasters estimate a 70% chance of severe geomagnetic activity when the
CME arrives--perhaps tonight, Sept. 14-15, or tomorrow night, 15-16. Sky
watchers at all latitudes should be alert for auroras.
2. Don't forget the IAA Telescope / Solar day at The Argory, near Moy, on
the Armagh/Tyrone border, on Sat 17th. The event is for charity workers in the
area, not a free-for-all for astronomers, so you're only invited / expected
to go if you have a telescope to put on display, particularly if you can offer
some solar observing.
It's from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Please let me know if you're planning to
attend.
3. Don't forget the IAA's keynote opening lecture, by Professor Chandra
Wickramasinghe, on Wed 21st, Room 5, Stranmillis College, Belfast. "Where are we
in our search for our origins?" will propose that all life on Earth came from
space, seeded by giant comets. Fascinating & controversial stuff - not to be
missed.
