1. Mon, 3 Oct, 00.10am BBC1 TV: The Sky at Night:  latest findings about the 
planets.
7.00pm, BBC4 TV: Journeys from the Centre of the Earth: the effects of  
earthquakes.
Repeat: 8.30pm, BBC4  TV: The Sky at Night: latest findings about the planets.

2. Wed. 5 Oct,  9.00pm, BBC2 TV: Space Race - Kennedy's challenge to put a 
man on the Moon  (4/4).

3. Thu, 6 Oct, 11.00am: BBC R4: Sir Arthur C. Clarke - The Science  and the 
Fiction.

4. Sat, 8 Oct, 12.45pm, BBC2 TV: Repeat: The Sky  at Night: latest findings 
about the  planets.

EVENTS

5. ECLIPSE! Mon, 3 Oct, From  about 8.49  to about 11.15am : Partial Solar 
eclipse, maximum at about  9.59am. Safety First!   The IAA will be holding a 
public eclipse watch  in Botanic Gardens, beside the Ulster Museum, commencing at 
08.50. The BBC will  be there at that time to do an Outside Broadcast, and 
Steven Nolan (Radio  Ulster) will be ringing at about 09.50 for a chat!  


6. Lecture: Mon 3 Oct, Prof Mark Bailey, "Comets and the Origin of the  Oort 
Cloud". EAAS, Thompson Primary School, Ballyrobert, 8 p.m. Admission  ё3.

 
7.   PUBLIC LECTURE: Irish Astronomical Association will be  holding a Public 
Lecture by Dr Patrick  McCafferty,  Queen's University, entitled "Comets in 
Irish  Myth", 7.30 p.m, Room 5, Stranmillis College. Admission  Free ."

8. Oct 7 - 9 (Fri evening to Sunday afternoon)  Whirlpool Star Party, 
Dooley's Hotel, Birr, Co Offaly. Details  on 

9. Mon. 17 Oct, Dublin. Nobel Laureate, Steven Weinberg (Author  of "The 
First Three Minutes") will deliver the Hamilton Award Lecture -  "Much Ado About 
Nothing" - How the problem of the energy of empty space became a  central 
concern of today's physics and cosmology. Details  later.

NEWS

10. NASA and Google have signed a memorandum of  understanding that outlines 
plans for cooperation.
