From: TerryMoselaol.com Date: Sun, 11 Dec 2005 18:39:36 EST Subject: Lidl Scopes, Lecture, Competition Hi all, 1. A comment on last year's Lidl 70mm Skylux telescope, from David Stewart, who owns two top quality Astrophysics apochromatic refractors, so he's used to the very best optics there are! "There is absolutely no question in my mind that the 'scope has sharp optics, with minimal chromatic aberration, and would easily have shown small sunspots on the disk, if visible that day. I was in Lidl last nite, and saw a picture of the 70mm Skylux (can't remember if it carries the same name). There seems to be several changes to [last year's] model: The tripod looks different, possibly tubular steel or aluminium legs?, the lens hood looks more moulded, the focuser looks different (different knobs?) It is on an equatorial mount, there may be a few changes also, hard to tell." It would be a great second 'scope, or a solar scope with an appropriate solar filter such as Baader Astrosolar, or even as a guide scope, if anyone does manual guiding these days! They go on sale on Monday morning, 12 December. 2. Don't Forget Leo Enright's lecture on Wednesday, 7.30 p.m., Stranmillis College, Belfast. 3. ESO and the European Association for Astronomy Education again invite school students to compete in the CATCH A STAR web-based competition.
