Subject: New Scientist, Binoc offer, HST event

Hi all,

1. Thanks to Danny Collins for the following, from the 9 April issue of New
Scientist: "Calling all backyard astronomers. NewScientist.com wants to develop
a slot for amateur astronomers and would like your help. If you keep a keen
eye on the heavens and would like to be involved, please email
backyard.astronomersnewscientist.com with brief details of your interest and how you could
help."

2. Thanks to Peter Paice for the following info:

"Go to Telescope House on the 'Net' where there is an offer of Meade binos.
at ё25 incl. postage.  They are 10 x 50 with BaK-4 porro prisms; fully coated;
brightness 25; long eye relief; rubber covered and solidly built. I have a
pair; not fully tested on astro subject but on garden/ tree objects, 'bite' is
quite good esp. for the price. The central focussing is a bit on the stiff side.
Comes with waist pouch/strap. Regards, Peter"
I did a check on the website, and one other relevant point is the field of
view, which works out at 6.5 degrees, which is quite good for this size of
binoc. As Peter says, he has not tested them astronomically, but with the Meade
name they should be at least 'OK', if not better. Postage may be extra outside
UK. (TM)

3. Don't forget the HST 15th anniversary special event at the Ulster Museum,
Stranmillis Road, Belfast, on Sunday 24 April, as per previous emails.

Clear skies,

Terry Moseley
